English:
The English Department is one of Mill Hill’s largest departments offering a hugely varied programme of teaching throughout the school. The department comprises six full-time and two part-time teachers. The nature of the subject is wonderfully diverse but our principal aim is to teach literacy, this being the state of being able to read, write and communicate, and we regard close reference to English Literature as crucial in this quest. But the subject is not confined to the literary - it aims to teach about many aspects of modern communication and Millhillians are encouraged to develop as speakers/debaters as well as simply learning how to write well or study texts.
Maths:
Mathematics is an important part of the curriculum at Mill Hill School and we endeavour to encourage a healthy attitude towards the subject and good working habits. Pupils are expected to pay high regard to the layout and tidiness of their work, and to appreciate the importance of showing working when answering a question. In the Fourth form we gather knowledge of what the student knows already and lay the foundations for GCSE. In the Remove and 5th form we study towards the Edexcel GCSE in Mathematics with the best in the yeargroup studying towards an additional GCSE in Statistics.
Business Studies:
The Business Education Department consists of four full time members of teaching staff and is housed in the Favell Building. There are four dedicated classrooms, along with a well stocked departmental library area on the first floor, shared with the Geography Department. The department delivers 4 courses at Key Stage 5, consisting of AS Business Studies and AS Economics and A2 Business Studies and A2 Economics.
The Business Education Department aims to create an atmosphere that is dynamic in terms of its delivery of subject material, stimulating and engendering an awareness of events and issues within the global business and economic environment.
Design Technology:
As the name of this subject suggests, Design and Technology is continuously evolving and upgrading as a subject. In recent years we have seen a number of improvements/changes in both teaching systems and equipment.
We have 30 top end computers with 19″ widescreen monitors. This means we can draw diagrams and read words viewed as 1:1 scale, or easily work on two packages simultaneously. We can view and manipulate video which can then be placed into presentations. The modular GCSE courses now accept power point CDs for coursework evidence to include advertising promotions.
Modern Languages:
Hola! Salut! Grüß Gott! The Modern Foreign Languages Department remains one of the most forward-looking departments at Mill Hill, developing the European Section 1967 - 2006 (working on projects with partner schools all over Europe) and Section Bilangue in 1967-1990. French, German and Spanish are currently taught in the department from beginners up to GCSE and A Level (Edexcel specifications) and there remains a thriving programme of exchanges and educational visits across to all three countries; work experience placements are arranged for 6th Formers. The department is well resourced (a brand new computerised language lab opened in 2007) and manned by enthusiastic native or near native speakers. We also employ a language assistant in each of the three languages to offer extra conversation lessons to exam year groups, as well as constantly updating our diverse cultural programme to entertain and enhance language study – our European Week activities each year are enjoyed by students of all ages and cultural backgrounds.
Creative Program:
Mill Hill is well known for the wealth of opportunities on offer in the creative arts. The facilities in the music, art and design and theatre studies departments have all been the subject of major investment in the past decade. This year has seen a major redevelopment of the School’s theatre which has been renamed The Patrick Troughton Theatre.
All of the creative departments make full use of London’s facilities. They also provide many opportunities to travel to the United States, Europe and beyond to further the pupils’ studies. The central importance of cultural activity in the School was recognised in 2006 with the establishment of the Arts 2007 initiative. Planned for the next few years are more CDs, greatly enhanced exhibition facilities and further theatre trips and participation in the Edinburgh Festival.
Sports Program:
Competitive and recreational sport has always had a special place in the life of pupils at Mill Hill. Sport provides exercise and competition, as well as encouraging team building and leadership skills.
Mill Hill is fortunate in that virtually all sporting activities are provided for on our 120-acre site, with provision being made for all ability levels, from novice to advanced.
The school has a modern sports hall, three new Eton Fives courts, hard tennis courts, netball courts, as well as facilities for rugby, hockey, cricket and football. More recently the school has set up a Golf Academy with our own PGA coach. The majority of sports take place within the School estate.
