IH Berlin PROLOG:
At IH Berlin PROLOG in the centre of Berlin in eastern Germany we teach German in German because that is the language we want to impart to you. When we founded PROLOG 20 years ago, we wanted to offer a modern alternative to the traditionally language teaching on the market. Our open and inviting atmosphere, the international mix of our students and the cosmopolitan character of Berlin have all combined to impress thousands of language learners from more than 60 countries over the years. We have carefully selected all of our teachers according to their academic and language abilities, as well as the way they relate to their students. The competence and experience of our German teachers is of particular importance: teaching qualifications are important, as is extensive experience teaching German as a foreign language at renowned schools and institutions. Many of our German teachers have already completed our Teacher Training programme.
Whether four or forty hours of tuition per week, in the following overview you can find the perfect German course for you - to meet your expectations and suit your tempo.

STANDARD German:
Together with students from all over the world, our STANDARD course profile offers 20 tuition hours (tuition hour = 45 minutes) per week. These German as a Foreign Language courses take place daily, from Monday to Friday, in small groups with a maximum of ten students per group.
Recommended for:
Our STANDARD German course is designed for motivated learners at all levels: you will develop your German language abilities in a small group with a goal-oriented syllabus. Alongside your language classes, you will have plenty of time to explore and discover Berlin.
Scope and content:
The four main language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) are at the core of the four tuition hours you will have in your small group every day. The first half of your tuition focuses more on theoretical understanding (grammar), which is then practised and put to use in the second half of the day's programme.
Motivation and communication within your German language class are increased and maximised through the focus on important, current topics related to Germany and its peoples. These themes provide the framework within which you will learn and explore the German language.
In order to expose you to as much variation as possible and increase the amount of different voices you hear, we teach our STANDARD language courses in teams. This means that you will have two teachers during the week. One big benefit for you is that you will learn German in slightly different ways and see the language used slightly differently. One advantage for us is that two teachers are better able to judge the best way for us to offer you the most support.
On Friday you will take a review test which checks on your progress and understanding of what you have covered during your classes that week. This will help you to get a better idea of your progress and assess your current abilities and it helps us to identify areas where you might need further practise or training.
COMBI 5 German:
On our COMBI 5 course you will learn German during your 25 tuition hours per week together with students who share your interest in the German language and come from every corner of the Earth. This German language course takes place daily, Monday to Friday, in a small group with a maximum of 10 participants. In addition to the group hours, you also have one lesson per day of individual tuition.
Recommended for:
The COMBI 5 German as a Foreign Language course suits committed students of all levels of ability. Taking your existing level into account, you will build up your understanding of the German language in a systematic and targeted process, in collaboration with your teachers and fellow students in your small group.
On top of the small group hours, your daily individual tuition gives you further training in German: training designed just for you. Even with all of these scheduled hours, there is still plenty of room in your timetable for you to discover the sights and sounds of Germany's capital.
Gala German:
Our GALA German language course takes place on two evenings per week and comprises four tuition hours per week. You will learn German in a small group with a maximum of ten members from a variety of nations but with a shared interest in learning languages.
Recommended for:
The GALA course profile with its evening sessions is designed especially for learners living in Berlin. The course is available to learners of all levels who have long-term goals and want to improve and consolidate their German language skills and develop their communicative abilities as part of a small group.
Scope and content:
The four main language skills (speaking, writing, reading and listening) form the core of your four tuition hours with your small group per week. The first half of your lesson focuses on theory (grammar and language systems) and the second half shifts to focus on language skills and communicative activities.
The motivational atmosphere within the classroom is enhanced through the selection of current and relevant topics and themes which you will explore. These subjects cover German culture, politics, leisure and the carious facets of everyday life in Berlin. These topics create the framework within which you will discover elements of the German language and engage in communicative skills practise.
DE LUXE German:
Our DE LUXE language course is the most intensive German course we offer. Together with an international mix of fellow language learners, your timetable contains 40 tuition hours of language classes per week. Your German course takes place every weekday, combining small group classes (with a maximum of ten students per group) with mini-group classes (with a maximum of five students per group) and two tuition hours per day of individual instruction.
Recommended for:
Our DE LUXE German courses are designed for language learners with some previous knowledge of German (A1-C2 levels), who want to considerably improve their German language skills in the shortest time possible. From Monday to Friday, you have eight tuition hours per day, and consequently only a limited amount of free-time for your own exploration of Berlin.
Scope and content:
Your day starts with two hours of individual tuition. These exclusive lessons are designed to address your personal goals and language requirements. This could be an intensive programme related to your profession or career, to help you prepare for a language exam, to improve your German language communication skills, to clarify your understanding of German grammar rules, to develop your German skills for the workplace, or to cover any theme or language topics that you have identified.
Following the one-to-one lesson, you will join your small group for four tuition hours, with a break of fifteen minutes sandwiched between two 90-minute group classes. These small group sessions are split into roughly 50% grammar training and 50% practical usage. Your training thereby ensures that all four of the major language skills (speaking, writing, reading and listening) are developed each day.
FIRST CLASS German:
The FIRST CLASS German course allows you to combine freedom with effectiveness: the schedule for your individual tuition (as well as the content of your lessons) is agreed personally with you. There are no fixed appointments, so you can decide when and at what time fits best with your schedule. Your exclusive tuition is set to match your learning preferences and tempo, as well as your specific goals and requirements.
Each of our FIRST CLASS students has different aims: it could be to improve your language skills for a business or professional environment, to practise and develop your spontaneous communicative abilities for an upcoming job interview, to prepare for a language or academic exam, or simply to freshen up or expand your knowledge of German grammar. Whatever your goals, we have the language teachers who can deliver a targeted and effective syllabus to help you meet them.
As the individual lessons take place at times to match your availability, it is possible to begin your course at any time. In order to select the best teacher for you and to arrange a schedule of appointments, we do require between 3 and five working days following your enrolment before tuition begins.
