Community Montessori School / Montessori Middle School of Kentucky:
Located in Lexington, Fayette County in the heart of Kentucky's Bluegrass region, Community Montessori School is a private non-sectarian school for children of 18 months to fifteen years old. We have served the Lexington, Kentucky community since 1970, offering two first class campuses, the first one serving toddler (18 months to 3 years old) , primary (3,4, and 5 year olds), and lower elementary (1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades), and the second campus for upper elementary (4th, 5th, and 6th grade) and middle school students in 7th and 8th grade. We also offer a before and after school program.
Educational Programs for Preschool through 8th Grade Students:
- Preschool and Kindergarten programs
- Elementary School
- Middle School
- Our curriculum includes math, language, sensorial materials, practical life, geography, science, botany, units of study, lessons in grace and courtesy, art, music, library and Spanish
The Primary Classroom (Preschool and Kindergarten):
The prepared environment of moveable, sensorial materials are designed for the "sensitive periods" of growth and development of the young child (ages 3-6). Children in this age range share complimentary developmental characteristics which make their grouping one of the key features of a Montessori program. The three and four year old students gain knowledge, experience, and confidence by emulating the examples of the older students.
Extended Day Program:
CMS offers an Extended Day Program (still considered part of the Primary level) for five and six year old students in which they stay for lunch and an additional three hours in the afternoon. This allows for the focus on "big work" as well as time for field trips and special lessons.
Students are usually prepared to begin Elementary Level work at age six or seven. However, acceptance is based on the developmental level of the student and not necessarily on age.
Our Elementary class is a transitional one: the student, filled with concepts, will soon reason with them. They are passing from sensorial dependence to intellectual independence. The Elementary environment recognizes this and gradually reduces the support and structure which were both useful and necessary to the Primary student. There are specific curriculum areas which are now approached from different aspects. Standardized and individually structured testing provides an ongoing assessment of each student's progress.
Montessori Middle School of Kentucky offers students a program of academic excellence and intrinsic experiences that exercise the developmental capabilities of early adolescence.
The students take classes in mathematics, science, history, English, foreign language, and art. The curriculum is presented in a two year cycle: biology and world history are offered during one year, physical science and U.S. history during the second year. Math is studied on a continuum from pre-algebra through high school level geometry each year. Works of literature are studied that support the themes and topics of the science and social studies programs.
