Our curriculum is built to deliver high career standard skillsets through intense hands-on training with small class sizes and individual attention from our faculty. Our resources are always available to our students during their studies and for the duration of their careers. Important to a solid curriculum and strong faculty is introducing students to industry professionals through mentorships, lectures and workshops, and providing our graduates with ample resources and opportunities, helping them transition into the industry.

Whether they are capturing a musical sound, spoken word, or a sound effect; the discipline of these tasks require grounded knowledge of the fundamentals which define Audio Production as a whole.

MOSMA offers low student to teacher ratios in its courses and it aims for small classroom settings where hands-on learning is enhanced. In following its mandate of providing optimal learning conditions for its students, MOSMA continues to encompass a variety of teaching and learning strategies within its course structure.

Our programme is an intensive and practical learning experience designed to provide graduates with the vocabulary, primary technical skills and concepts for a wide range of positions in the audio production industry.

AUDIO IN MEDIA (Full Time - Diploma):

1 Year / 1,305 Hours Intensive
Maximum enrolment of 15 students
1 intake per year - September to June

Upon completion of this programme, students will train in the four main fields of audio production: Music Production, Live Sound, Sound for Film, TV, Game Audio, and Radio Production. With these skills students are highly qualified to gain positions in any field of the audio industry. Students attain valuable hands-on experience and introduction to the industry through various practical projects working with professionals in the industry as well as through out industry mentorships and finally through their final practicum and work experience.

The Audio in Media programme runs Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm, for 42 week equalling 1,305 hours. This is equivalent to a 2 year university or college programme. Our course is intensive and at the end of the year our grads move into the industry highly skilled and very confident as Audio Professionals.

STUDIO RECORDING (Part Time):

This course delivers a comprehensive introduction to the studio production workflow. Topics covered include: Consoles, Signal Flow, Microphones, Recording Techniques, and basic Mixing. On completion of this course, students will have hands-on experience and knowledge of the tools and basic setup to successfully conduct a simple recording session.

PRO TOOLS Fundamentals I (AVID):

Pre-requisite to Pro Tools Fundamentals II & Mixing & Editing Techniques

This course introduces fundamental Pro Tools concepts and principles, covering everything an individual needs to know to complete a basic Pro Tools project, from initial setup to final mixdown.

Students also learn to build sessions that include multi-track recordings of, MIDI sequences and virtual instruments. Hands-on exercises and projects introduce essential techniques for creating sessions, recording and importing audio and MIDI, editing session media, navigating sessions and arranging media on tracks, and using basic processing and mixing techniques to finalise a production.

PRO TOOLS Fundamentals II (AVID):

Pre-requisite: Pro Tools Fundamentals I

This course expands upon the basic principles taught in the Pro Tools Fundamentals I (PT101) course and introduces the core concepts and techniques students need to competently operate a Pro Tools system running mid-sized sessions.

Students learn to build sessions designed for commercial purposes and improve the results of their recording, editing, and mixing efforts. The hands-on exercises provide experience setting up sessions, importing media, working with digital video, spotting sound effects, using loop recording and MIDI Merge techniques, working with virtual instruments, warping with Elastic Audio, applying Real-Time Properties, creating clip loops, applying signal processing, using automation, and using submixes and track groups to simplify a final mix.

MIXING & EDITING TECHNIQUES:

Maximum Class Size of 5 Students
2 Evening per Week, 6 Classes, 18 Hours
Pre-requisite: Pro Tools Fundamentals I *Not required if experienced with Pro Tools

This course introduces students to contemporary mixing & editing techniques in music production using the industry standard Pro Tools software. Topics include; mixing concepts, internal 'in the box' signal routing, automation, signal processors and signal processing techniques.

On completion of this course, students will learn the steps in creating an efficient mix session and complete a full mix of their chosen material.

MUSIC CREATION WITH ABLETON:

Maximum Class Size of 5 Students
2 Evening per Week, 8 Classes, 24 Hours
No Experience Required

This course delivers an introduction to this ever popular program which will open up new possibilities and change the way you think about making music.

On completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of basic musical elements such as rhythm, harmony, tempo, timbre, form, structure, and the Ableton Live software workflow.

Langara College is one the leading undergraduate institutions in BC providing University Studies, Career Studies, and Continuing Studies programs and courses annually to more than 21,000 students. Langara College Continuing Studies offers a diverse range of lifelong learning opportunities, with over 700 courses and over 35 certificate programs.

Langara College Continuing Studies provides two full-time music programs; the one-year Digital Music Production (DMP) Certificate Program, and the 14-week Singer-Songwriter Certificate Program.

Both programs are full-time and take place Monday-Friday from 6 PM-10 PM. The courses are taught by instructors who are both experienced educators, as well as active members in the music business as composers, songwriters, producers, arrangers, engineers, re-mixers, DJs, and more.

Entry into both programs is based on a short interview and recorded examples of an applicant's work.
The Digital Music Production Program is an intensive, one-year full-time program training freelance music producers and composers for film, TV, gaming, advertising & multimedia.

The Singer-Songwriter Certificate Program gives the aspiring singer/songwriter (from novice to advanced) the opportunity to hone their skills in song writing, performing live, recording demos, and marketing & promoting their music.

The DMP program is limited to 16 students and the Singer-Songwriter program to 11 students.
