St. Andrews International Schools, Thailand:
St. Andrews International Schools, Thailand offer an education that extends beyond the English National Curriculum and embraces the learner-centred principles of the International Baccalaureate. We want each child to be confident, happy and develop a real love of learning which will they will carry with them through life.
Early Years Program:
Age for each stage of Early Years
# Nursery: For children ages 2 - 3 years old.
# Kindergarten: For children ages 3 - 4 years old.
# Reception: For children ages 4 - 5 years old.
A child may enter Nursery the term after she or he has turned 2 years old. Play is at the heart of our Early Years curriculum. Children need to play in order to have fun and begin to understand the world around them.
The curriculum is aimed at developing skills in the following areas Personal Social and Emotional, Communication Language and Literacy, Mathematical Development, Knowledge and Understanding of the world, Creativity and Physical Development.
We provide a stimulating and safe environment which we believe encourages our youngest children to be confident and independent learners.
As the children progress from Nursery to Kindergarten and then Reception Class we gradually introduce more structured learning situations whilst still encouraging learning through first-hand experience.
We base our curriculum on the Early Years Foundation Stage of England and Wales. Below gives an outline of the learning goals to be achieved through each area of learning.
Personal, Social and Emotional
The children are given opportunities to develop skills which help them to know what is right and wrong, how to work independently or in a group, self help skills and consideration of others feeling and needs.
Communication, Language and Literacy
The children are given opportunities to develop skills to be able to interact with others and take turns, enjoy listening to and using spoken language, develop a phonetic knowledge and have the confidence to use this in their reading and writing.
Mathematical Development
The children are given the opportunity to develop a love of numbers and problem solving, confidently use a range of mathematical language and apply their knowledge and strategies to everyday practical experiences.
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
The children are encouraged to investigate using all of their senses this includes observing, questioning, planning, and constructing. They are encouraged to look for similarities, differences and change in the world around them.
Creative Development
The children are given opportunities to express and communicate their ideas, thoughts and feelings by using a range of Materials and tools, imaginative and role-play, movement, designing and making, and a variety of songs and musical instruments.
Physical Development
The children are encouraged to develop skills to be able to handle tools and objects safely, move with confidence and coordination using a range of small and large apparatus and also to recognise the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.
Primary School Program:
Our Primary School Program focuses on the further development of each child.
Curriculum
At the Sathorn campus we focus on how children learn and deliver our curriculum to meet all learning styles. We encourage children to understand how they learn and become enthusiastic, life long learners.
We actively teach thinking skills and motivate the children to be problem solvers. We want our children to become the leaders of tomorrow and so we make sure they have opportunities to develop leadership skills from the very start.
We also help the children to develop life skills and give them opportunities to experience aspects of the world of work; for example every child will be in a class assembly and a stage performance every year so that they learn how to present to an audience
The curriculum is based closely on the National Curriculum of England and our teachers have adopted the approach encouraged through the “Excellence and Enjoyment” document so that the subjects are integrated and the subject areas overlap. This means that a single block of study is carefully planned to contain mathematics, language work, science, technology, the arts and humanities.
Personal, emotional and social development is central to all that we do with our children and we concentrate on: responsibility, resilience and resourcefulness so that children grow to become good citizens who will persevere in the face of difficulties and know how to solve problems for themselves or have the confidence to ask for assistance when needed.
We understand the importance of all subjects and so the creative arts and creativity are actively developed throughout the school both as discreet subjects and integrated into the curriculum.
Our children enjoy school and parents know that they are in the hands of trusted and knowledgeable adults.
Assessment
Before entering school we invite the child to spend up to a day with us in class. The class teacher will talk with the child, ask them to take part in class activities and then assess their readiness to join our school.
Throughout their time at St. Andrews, Sathorn the children are continually assessed by their teachers. They are set targets each term and a record of their progress can be seen in their progress books. We also analyse their reading so that we can measure their progress and assess their attainment in this very important area.
