English for University & College Lecturers
A wide-ranging, skills-based course for practising lecturers in the further and higher education sectors who are required to design courses and/or deliver lectures in the English language.
The courses are written and delivered by experienced practitioners in the field who are also qualified English Language Teachers.
The standard course provides 25 hours’ contact time (1 hour = 60 mins) plus assignments. A complimentary tour of Cambridge and an escorted evening activity are also included.
Availability
Courses are delivered on a closed-group or individual basis all year. In addition, open-group tuition is available during the major university vacations. Our full range of general/professional courses are available during the summer, as well as courses for children from 5 to17 years, making it possible for the whole family to participate in our summer school.
Required level of English
To obtain maximum benefit from the course, delegates should have a working knowledge of English equivalent to level B2 on the CEFR. We will assess delegates’ levels as part of the registration process. Delegates who feel they need to ‘brush up’ their English before taking the course may like to join one of our general English courses at appropriate level for one or more weeks.
In the case of individuals or a closed group, if the delegates’ levels are below B2 we can provide a modified course to include more direct language support, though an extended stay incorporating a general English course might prove more beneficial.
Delegates in closed groups may be from the same or different faculties.
Course content
Standard topics covered (these may be modified to take account of the delegates’ specific interests):
1.Lecturing / presentation skills, including opportunity to ‘trial’ lectures
2.Effective communication techniques
3.Cross-cultural issues: dealing with multi-national groups
4. Preparation of course materials and unit outlines
5.Setting of examination questions and other assessment tasks
6.Terminology used in examinations
7.Marking systems
8.Correspondence with students and other members of the academic community
9.Comparison of UK and other systems; entry routes to UK universities
