Shades Mountain Christian School:
Shades Mountain Christian School is an independent Christian school located in Hoover, the largest suburb of Birmingham, Alabama. The school is a ministry of Shades Mountain Independent Church with an enrollment of approximately 470 students in Grades K4 through 12. Many students commute from Jefferson and Shelby counties. The school provides a strong academic program within the context of the biblical worldview. Students have the opportunity to explore and develop their talents in a variety of areas such as music, art, and athletics.
Christian Education for Students in Grades K4-12:
Elementary School Curriculum (Grades K3 - 6th):
The elementary school consists of grades K3 through 6th. The curriculum is primarily A Beka with additional supplemental materials. Bible, reading, spelling, grammar, math, science, and social studies are taught daily. In Kindergarten through 2nd grade there is a strong emphasis on phonics.
Middle School Curriculum (Grades 7 & 8):
Each year students are required to take Bible, English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Physical Education. The Middle School Bible courses are designed to focus on character development and increasing the student’s awareness of the relevancy of the Bible to their life. In 8th grade, students who are gifted in mathematics may take Algebra I (normally a 9th grade class) which places them on an advanced math track which they will continue on through the 12th grade. There are several criteria that must all be met for an 8th grader to take Algebra I (please contact the guidance office for more specific information). Science includes a zoo exploratory trip in the 7th grade and a Mission to Mars through the McWane Center during the 8th grade. The 7th grade social studies course is Geography and the 8th grade course is World History I.
High School Curriculum:

After School Program:
The After School Program (ASP) is available for students in K3 through 6th grade. This program includes supervised recreation, study, rest, reading, snack times, and other creative activities.
