London International Academy:
London International Academy (LIA) is a co-educational private boarding school for international secondary level students, located in downtown of London in the Southwestern part of Ontario, Canada. Our aim is to help international students achieve their goals of earning an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) in order to attend the North American University of their choice. We encourage students from all over the world who demonstrate a positive attitude, proven academic achievement, strong leadership skills, and the motivation to succeed to apply to London International Academy.
LIA offers the following residential academic programs for international students:
High School Programs:
In Ontario, students typically attend secondary school for four years, from grades 9 to 12 in order to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Students have the option of a fifth year if they would like to improve their 4U grades. The majority of our students study for two to three years in their home country before enrolling here at London International Academy (LIA).
Subjects are offered in the following areas:
The Arts; Business Studies; International Languages; Computer Studies; Communication & Technology; English; English Second Language ESL Centre; Health & Physical Education; Mathematics; Science; Social Sciences & Humanities.
Each year we offer over 20 different high school courses each year. However we place the most emphasis on English, Math and Science courses.
Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) Requirements:
In order to earn the Ontario Secondary School Diploma a student must:
- Earn 18 compulsory credits (all students at LIA must complete ENG 3U, and ENG 4U)
- Earn 12 additional optional credits
- Complete 40 (or equivalent) hours of community involvement activities (international students studying in Ontario for only one year are only required to complete 15 hours).
- Successfully pass the Ontario Provincial Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), or the Literacy Course (OLC4O).
ESL Centre:
London International Academy is aware that second-language international-students need additional help to improve their English skills in order to meet the expectations of upper level Academic English courses like ENG 3U and ENG 4U.
Once a student arrives at London International Academy they are given an English Placement Test, and based on their results we place them in one of the seven English Levels.
Our ESL CENTRE incorporates three levels of ESL, A0, B0, and C0. All three levels are taught in the same class and this allows our teachers to move students along the spectrum according to their own language development.
TOEFL, IELTS, COPE Test Preparation Courses:
In order to assist students in preparation for the TOEFL, IELTS and COPE language tests, London International Academy (LIA) offers a test preparation course known as TIC during the entire school year. Classes are offered one hour after regular school hours from Monday to Friday and an intensive course for COPE is provided during the winter term.
Teachers design course lessons based on the language levels of students. The course includes an introduction to the format and assessment criteria of one particular test, some test-taking strategies to deal with each section, and classroom practice. Students are also given model tests to keep track of their progress throughout the course.
Benefits of TIC preparation course:
- Small-size classes (less than ten students)
- The most up-to-date information about the format & content of the test
- Individualized instruction
- Immediate feedback
- Continuous and on-going support
- Help students to register for the test
Cultural Exchange Program (CEP): Each Summer London International Academy (LIA) runs a Cultural Exchange Program (CEP) between the months of July and August. Students between the ages of 11 and 17 will come to Canada to learn about the culture, improve their English, and visit North America’s top tourist destinations.
There are three different programs to choose from:
- 2 Weeks
- 3 Weeks
- ESL 6 Week Summer Program
CEP students make significant progress with their English. All students must take a placement test (Pre-Test) at the beginning of program, and a final examination (Post-Test) during the last week. Both the placement test and final exam will be divided into two parts; listening and speaking, and reading and writing.
Based on test comparison the average rate of improvement for all students is 9%. This increases their original English grade level from Grade 4 to Grade 5 in the Canadian Education System.
