The French Department organises a variety of outings for all children, from Reception to Year 6, to bring learning to life. French is taught in all classes by a staff of six qualified and experienced French teachers. Children are grouped according to knowledge and ability for these lessons.
Science Subject Areas:
Science
All children follow a course, based on the English National Curriculum, which includes a study of all the basic concepts of science. They are encouraged to explore and investigate in order to have a greater understanding and appreciation of the world about them and how it works. The science concepts are organised into four main strands:
- Physical Processes
- Materials and their Properties
- Life Processes and Living Things
- Experimental and Investigative Science
Environmental and Social Studies
Children learn how other people live and have lived. Emphasis is put upon the ability to find information from a variety of sources, to communicate findings through an appropriate medium, to interpret pictures, charts, graphs, maps etc., and to evaluate information.
ICT
The ICT curriculum is designed to enable our children to use technology effectively in order to solve problems. Foundation Stage pupils experience ICT as part of the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) programme. From Years 1-6, each pupil has a lesson in specific ICT skills every week. Of course, ICT is also integrated into other subjects, where appropriate, to enhance their learning.
Expressive Arts Subject Areas:
Art
Many different types of art and craft flourish at GES, including painting, claywork, woodwork, collage, mosaics, model making, sewing, embroidery, knitting etc. Children are taught to care for and use the materials intelligently and creatively.
Music
Our aim is to motivate, interest and stimulate musical enjoyment in all children. Children discover music through singing, movement, dance and instrumental activities.
Drama
Drama is invaluable as a means for developing language skills, encouraging positive social interaction and building confidence. The children’s imagination is stimulated by role play and improvisation activities.
Dance
Dance develops the ability of children to communicate and express themselves through movement. The children develop awareness of the way their bodies move alongside being taught specific dance skills.
Physical Education:
The emphasis is on participation in an enjoyable and safe environment to gain the understanding that physical activity is an important aspect in the development of their personal well-being.
Extra Curricular Activities:
Children participate in a wide range of activities and make the most of every opportunity. A variety of extra-curricular activities is offered each term. These activities are held either after school or during lunchtime. At the beginning of each term, children and their parents choose which extra-curricular activities they would like to do.
