FIS and ISW are leading members of the International Baccalaureate Organisaton and implement a curriculum in the Primary School based on the principles espoused by the Primary Years Programme (PYP). The PYP is designed for students ages 3 - 12, and offers a comprehensive, inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning.

It provides an internationally designed model for concurrency in learning and incorporates guidelines on student learning styles, teaching methodologies and assessment strategies.

What's so special about the Primary School?
There are so many things that make it special, that it's difficult to list them all. From the highly qualified homeroom and specialist teachers and support staff, to the beautiful light-filled building (purpose-built and completed in August of 2001) and its wooded surroundings, the school is an ideal place in which young children can learn.

FIS Elementary School (grades 2-5):
Image of International elementary & high school in Frankfurt, GermanyThe FIS Elementary School is on the main FIS campus, where students in Grades 2 through 5 are taught. The curriculum in the Elementary School offers a balanced program of academic studies and extra-curricular activities, which aim at helping all students of all nationalities develop self-awareness and a love of learning.

The Elementary School follows the Primary Years Programme (PYP) of the IB. the heart of the PYP philosophy is a commitment to structured inquiry as an ideal vehicle for learning.

Through the Programme of Inquiry it seeks to enable children to view their world with understanding, sensitivity and fairness. It is important for students to understand how human beings build their cultures, how they value their past, present and future, and how they impact the environment. Children also need to develop the ability to solve problems and recognize the need, value and appropriateness of sharing and cooperation as world citizens, valuing our differences and our similarities as human beings.

:
The Upper School provides a well-balanced education for some 850 students, Grades 6 - 12, delivered by 85 faculty members. While there is no separation between Middle School and High School, developmentally appropriate practices and accommodations are made at each grade level, with the majority of faculty teaching across all grade levels.

Students are provided with many opportunities to develop academically, socially and emotionally with courses designed to provide them with the skills and opportunities to develop the attributes of the IB Learner Profile and also fulfill the mission of our school.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme:
The Diploma Programme is based on the pattern of no single country but strikes a balance between the specialization required in some national systems of education and the breadth preferred in others. Students who satisfy the demands of the Diploma demonstrate a strong commitment to learning, both in terms of the mastery of subject content and in the development of the skills and discipline necessary for success in a competitive world.

Picture of International elementary & high school in Frankfurt, GermanyColleges and universities throughout the world welcome and value students who have achieved a IB Diploma.

At FIS, Grade 10 students decide, with the recommendation of their teachers and counselors, whether or not to pursue the full IB Diploma Programme while in Grades 11 and 12, or to take IB certificates in individual subjects. In both cases students must sit the examinations provided by the IB.

The Diploma Programme is a comprehensive and rigorous two-year curriculum leading to a set of external examinations taken by students in May of their final year at FIS. Students pursuing the IB Diploma study six subjects. Typically three subjects are higher level, and the remaining three are at standard level.Currently, over 75% of our students graduate with the IB diploma. Those not taking the full IB Diploma Programme receive a FIS High School diploma.

FIS also operates a branch in Wiesbaden for students age 3 to Grade 8:

International School Wiesbaden, founded in 1992, is a division of Frankfurt International School. Many of the ISW faculty have been here since its inception and take great pride in the school’s growth and achievements. The school currently enrolls about 250 students aged 3 to 12 in First Steps through Grade 8.

One of the great benefits of a smaller school is the warm and intimate atmosphere it provides. This atmosphere allows us to create a supportive, yet challenging environment where students feel respected and valued. It is in this atmosphere that we believe students learn best, and we take great pride in preparing students to gain maximum benefit from the time they spend in the school.

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is offered from First Steps through Grade 5. The Grade 6 program at ISW is is identical to the main FIS campus.
