International College of Technology (ICOT) is a vibrant and modern college in Westmoreland Street, in the heart of Dublin's city centre. We offer a range of English language courses for students from Ireland and around the world. Our English courses include English for Business, English for Academic Purposes and preparation courses for the TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge exams. We also offer accredited degree, diploma and certificate courses in the fields of computing, business management, accounting and hospitality among others.
ICOT offers the following English courses in Dublin:
One-Year Courses:
- Certificate in ESOL International (EDI Entry Level 1)
- Certificate in ESOL International (EDI Entry Level 2)
- Certificate in ESOL International (EDI Entry Level 3)
- Certificate in ESOL International (EDI Level 1)
- Certificate in ESOL International (EDI Level 2)
ESOL International qualifications are intended for candidates who are not native speakers of English and who wish to achieve a high quality, internationally recognised qualification in English that is available and recognised world-wide.
The aims of this syllabus are to enable candidates to develop the ability to:
•develop knowledge and understanding of the spoken and written forms of English in meaningful contexts;
•develop the ability to listen and read for gist and detail and apply this knowledge and understanding to speaking and writing;
•develop the ability to communicate effectively in English through the written and spoken word;
•develop knowledge and understanding of the grammar of English, and the ability to apply it accurately in the appropriate context;
•lay a suitable foundation for the further study of the language.
Progression:
Each level of ESOL International is a free-standing qualification and is separately certificated. The qualifications EDI Certificate in ESOL International Entry Levels 1-3 and Levels 1 & 2 have been closely aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF) at levels A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1 respectively. Each level builds on the previous one and provides a consistent extension to the levels of skill and knowledge developed at the previous level.
Cambridge FCE Preparation (8 / 12 weeks):
Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE) is an exam for people who can use everyday written and spoken English at an upper-intermediate level. It is an ideal exam for people who want to use English for work or study purposes.
Cambridge CPE Preparation (8 / 12 weeks):
Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) is Cambridge ESOL's most advanced exam. It is aimed at people who use English for professional or study purposes.
Cambridge CAE Preparation (8 / 12 weeks):
Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge English: Advanced is set at C1 level – the second highest on the CEFR scale. C1 is the level of English required for demanding academic and professional settings. It shows that you are highly proficient in English.
IELTS Exam Preparation (8 / 12 weeks):
IELTS is the International English Language Testing System, the world’s proven English language test. IELTS was one of the pioneers of four skills English language testing over 17 years ago, and continues to set the standard for English language testing today. Close to 6000 organisations and more than 1.4 million test takers around the world trust and recognise IELTS as a secure, valid and reliable indicator of true-to-life ability to communicate in English for education, immigration and professional accreditation.
IELTS is designed to assess English language skills at all levels. There is no such thing as a pass or fail in IELTS. Results are reported as band scores on a scale from 1 (the lowest) to 9 (the highest). The aims of this syllabus are to enable candidates to develop the ability to achieve the highest scores possible within their ability.
TOEFL Exam Preparation (8 / 12 weeks):
The TOEFL® test (Test of English as a Foreign Language™) is the one of the most widely respected English-language test in the world, recognized by more than 7,500 colleges, universities and agencies in more than 130 countries. Wherever you want to study, the TOEFL test can help you get there. The TOEFL iBT™ test measures your ability to use and understand English at the university level. And it evaluates how well you combine your listening, reading, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks.
English for Business Level 1 (One Year):
This qualification is also known as ‘EDI Entry Level 1 Certificate in ESOL International (LCCI EfB)’ is for candidates who wish to develop and test their ability to communicate in English within a business context. Entry 1 is for candidates who have achieved a fundamental understanding of English in a business context and who have the ability to use the language in a practical way at a very basic level. The aims of this qualification are to enable candidates to develop the ability to:
-read and understand basic business-related English texts
-write basic English for simple, brief business communications
-understand simple, spoken and recorded business English
-participate in short conversations
English for Business Level 2 (One Year):
This qualification is also known as ‘EDI Entry Level 2 Certificate in ESOL International (LCCI EfB)’ is for candidates who wish to develop and test their ability to communicate in English within a business context. Entry Level 2 is for candidates who have achieved a fundamental understanding of English in a business context and who have the ability to use the language in a practical way at a very basic level.
English for Business Level 3 (one year):
This qualification is also known as ‘EDI Entry Level 3 Certificate in ESOL International (LCCI EfB)’ is for candidates who wish to develop and test their ability to communicate in English within a business context. Entry 3 is for candidates who have achieved a fundamental understanding of English in a business context and who have the ability to use the language in a practical way at a very basic level.
The aims of this syllabus are to enable candidates to develop the ability to:
- write apt and accurate English suited to the stated purpose
- understand and write English using formats that are current and common in business communication
- adopt the tone, form, layout, content and composition appropriate to the requirements of a given situation
- understand spoken and recorded Business English at the defined level
- participate in conversation
English for Academic Purposes (8 / 12 weeks):
The English for Academic Purposes course at ICOT is designed to help students use the English Language effectively to study any course through English. Students taking this course would typically have a relatively high standard of English, but do not have any formal English qualification necessary to gain entry onto University programmes at either undergraduate or postgraduate level.
Courses are typically 15 hours per week with a further 10 hours of guided self-study in the form of assignments set by the tutors. Assessment for this course will be the IELTS exam. In addition to receiving IELTS scores, an English for Academic Purposes Certificate will be awarded to candidates who successfully complete the learning outcomes and assessments for the following parts: Reading; Writing; Listening and Speaking.
