Maplewood Montessori School, Portland area:
Conveniently situated at the corner of Woodford and Nevens Street in Portland, Maine, Maplewood Montessori School is a small, authentic Montessori school serving children 3 to 6 years old. Our mission is to provide a peaceful, safe, and welcoming environment where children can begin the process of becoming life-long learners, responsible citizens and respectful, active members of a community.

Principles of Montessori Education:

Maplewood is a small, active community of teachers, parents and children who strongly value the philosophy and principles of Dr. Maria Montessori, who viewed children as avid learners seeking to connect with the real world through meaningful, purposeful work. Montessori believed that by providing an environment prepared to meet these needs during the early years, children are likely to more fully develop their academic, social, and spiritual selves.

The Montessori Method adheres to the notions that children have:
- a heightened capacity for learning and internalizing particular material at particular times
- a need to do meaningful and purposeful work
- a need to freely explore materials and connect to lessons in concrete ways
- an interest in manipulating small objects

Our Montessori School Schedule:

- Morning sessions run from 8:30 to 11:30, and are available Monday through Thursday; parents may choose to enroll children for three or four mornings a week.

- Our extended day program extends the day until 2:30, and is available Monday through Thursday. This program is intended for children who have had a year of experience in the classroom.
