The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum covers the period from birth until the end of a child’s Reception Year, and focuses on four areas of a child’s early development:
* A Unique Child
* Positive Relationships
* Enabling Environments
* Learning and Development
The fourth area, Learning and Development, covers a further six areas of learning:
* Personal, Social and Emotional Development
* Communication, Language and Literacy
* Problem solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
* Knowledge and Understanding of the World
* Physical Development
* Creative Development
The National Curriculum is divided into the core subjects of:
* English, Mathematics, Information Communication Technology (I.C.T.) and Religious Education (R.E.)
and the foundation subjects of:
* Art, Design and Technology, Geography, History, Music, Physical Education, Science and Personal, Social and Health Education (P.S.H.E).
These subjects form the statutory curriculum, and our planning ensures comprehensive coverage. Many subjects are taught through a cross-curricular topic based approach. Where appropriate there is subject specific teaching. Teachers plan work together to ensure equality of opportunities, continuity and progression. Glenhurst School also gives children the opportunity to learn French, teaches swimming, music and recorders and provides visits and outings to the theatre, concerts, museums, historical sites and places of interest relevant to each class’s topic work. There are specialist peripatetic teachers for music including individual piano lessons, French, I.C.T and speech and drama.
