Beginner to Intermediate Level Mandarin Chinese Language Immersion Programs:
- Introduction to Mandarin Part I
For absolute beginners - Level 1 introduces Pinyin, and teaches the basics of the Mandarin language.
Introduction to Mandarin, Part II
An introductory course for those with some familiarity with Mandarin and Pinyin, with emphasis on simple conversation and language patterns.
- Conversational Mandarin I
The Standard Chinese Course on Conversation is a conversational course with 10 classes, having an emphasis on everyday usage of Mandarin. Each class will feature two or three grammatical items which will be discussed, and then practiced in simulated environments related to the appropriate topics.
Elementary Mandarin, Part I
In the elementary classes, we begin to conduct the classes in Mandarin and English in parallel. A more diverse selection of written and recorded material is included to broaden the students exposure to Mandarin and Chinese culture.
Elementary Mandarin, Part II
Earlier courses focus on vocabulary, and listening and speaking in sentences; in CP 4 and beyond, classes will primarily be conducted in Mandarin, and students will begin to engage in more extended discussions. In CP4, the primary reading material is the classic Chinese short story Chen Huansheng Goes to Town.Intermediate Mandarin, Part I
Intermediate classes will be conducted in Mandarin (but English support will be provided when necessary). The reading material in CP5 (and continued in CP6) is the classic novel Fortress Besieged. Readings and class discussions will help participants to become comfortable with spontaneous discussions in Mandarin.
Intermediate Mandarin, Part II
The final core course offers extensive opportunity for conversational practice. Readings include selections from a variety of sources, such as current newspapers, Chinese fiction, and Chinese movie scripts.
Advanced Business Mandarin
An advanced conversational course with a focus on business Mandarin. Prior to each class, readings will be assigned for discussion in the class.
Advanced Mandarin for Tourists
This advanced conversational class will feature discussions and readings appropriate for those planning a visit to China. Topics include:
- Dealing with Hotels and Restaurants
- Trains, Planes and Buses
- Getting Around
- Street Food and Night Markets
- Where to go and what to see
- Participants will engage in round table discussions, and also make a presentation about their travel plans for China.
- The Dinner Experience
The Dinner Experience is our one evening introduction to the Mandarin of menus. One hour of introduction to Chinese characters and spoken Mandarin will be followed by a meal that the participants - haltingly, perhaps - will order in Mandarin.
The Six Dinner Course
Have you ever gone to a Chinese restaurant and wondered what the banners on the wall said? Perhaps suspected that those who could read the Chinese menu had a greater variety of options (possibly even at a better price)?
