All-Boys School in Manhattan, New York

Buckley School, New York:
Buckley School is a private K-12 school for boys on the upper east side of Manhattan in New York. Having high standards, pursuing excellence, exhibiting concern for each child and maintaining the level of student engagement are goals of our first-rate faculty here at Buckley. In addition to exceptional teachers, what makes Buckley truly special is our focus on the development of the whole boy. We require boys to participate in all areas of school life, engaging the mind, body and spirit. Academically, boys study English, math, science, history and two foreign languages, along with a healthy dose of writing and public speaking. Each year, boys take classes in art and music, perform in a class play, as well as play sports in the afternoon. In the Middle and Upper Schools there are two Glee Clubs, open to all who want to sing. These boys perform onstage throughout the school year, with a highlight being the annual operettas.

 Mission Statement:

The goals of a Buckley education are that every boy learn fundamental skills, gain self-confidence through disciplined thought and action, develop personal integrity and respect for others, and discover the joy of learning and the satisfaction of pursuing excellence.

 Moral Development:

The moral development of the boys is also a chief concern. Each year our boys are exposed to programs that address such topics as decision-making and accountability. In School, boys candidly discuss these and similar issues in the Values and Leadership courses. Daily interactions between boys and members of our community provide teachers and administrators with many “teachable moments”. The School's motto, Honor et Veritas, reflects two qualities we seek to develop in boys. Our expectation is that each boy will give his best, and we place great emphasis on good manners, diligence, respect, self-discipline, integrity and compassion.

 Programs:

Kindergarten through Programs for boys; Lower School Program; Middle School Program; Upper School Program; Athletics Program; Arts program. Thinking, reading, writing, speaking, and problem solving are the skills in which Buckley's curriculum is grounded. Academic subjects include math, history, social studies, French, Spanish and Latin.

 Strong Sense of Community:

There is a strong sense of community at Buckley; boys learn cooperation and teamwork in the classroom, on the stage, and on the playing fields. We strongly promote these relationships and encourage all members--including parents and alumni--to be closely involved with the school.

With fundamentals based on rich traditions, our community also addresses change when needed for growth. Respect between students and faculty makes for a considerate environment where boys keep their individual honors and accomplishments in balance with the need to work as a group and help others.

 Values and Community Service:

Beginning from day one, students are presented with questions of values and moral decision-making. Strength of character is emphasized at Buckley and students are taught the importance of respect, integrity, sensitivity, and compassion. Throughout a student's years at Buckley, significant emphasis is placed upon manners and taking responsibility for one's actions.

One of the ways the school educates boys about decision-making and accountability is through Project Charlie, a program that focuses on self-awareness, relationships, peer pressure, and drug and alcohol abuse. Project Charlie is taught once a week from Beginners through Class IV. In the Middle and Upper Schools, Freedom from Chemical Dependency, a school-based alcohol and drug prevention group, makes annual presentations to raise the boys' awareness about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.

 Parent Involvement:

Parent involvement is greatly encouraged at Buckley. The library, the safety patrol, stage productions, the Family Skating Party, the Theatre Benefit, the Used Clothing and Book Sales, the Book Fair, Exhibition Day and Grandparents Day provide many opportunities to volunteer. The father's committee organizes father-son events such as the overnight camping trip, the annual dinner, and a professional baseball game outing.
