Located just 10 minutes north of Downtown Los Angeles, Shepherd University's School of English as a Secondary Language (ESL) accepts and prepares students of all levels of English ability, no matter where they are from or where they have learned English in the past. Our ESL School is uniquely designed with field trips and courses that offer the vocabulary you need to express yourself and pursue your goals in any English speaking environment – technical, professional, industrial, social, and academic.

Shepherd University was established in the heart of Los Angeles in August 1999, and has grown into a university with five schools: the School of Language Program, the School of Nursing, the School of Information of Technology, the School of Music, the School of Theology. Each of these schools offers a range of undergraduate and graduate courses to students from all over the world.

The ESL program works to maximize linguistic and cultural comprehension while minimizing learning time. In order to do so, we provide you – new and developing English language learners – with the highest quality instruction and lots of chances for personal and social growth.

Creative activities in the real-world and classroom build the language and collaborative learning skills that English language learners need to become fluent, creative thinkers, speakers, and writers who can pursue their futures with confidence and expertise.

The program encompasses 4 comprehensive categories: Speaking, Reading, Writing and Listening - broken down into 5 levels:
- Beginner
- High Beginner
- Intermediate
- High Intermediate
- Advanced

We also offer 3 elective courses to help students focus on what they need to improve most to grow as an American English language learner:
- Conversation
- Speaking and Writing
- Learning at Your Own Pace (LYOP)

Approval to operate a post-secondary school: Shepherd University has state approval to operate from the California Bureau for Private Post-Secondary Education. (BPPE)

SEVIS Certification: Shepherd University is certified by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services(USCIS) through the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) to
issue Forms I-20 and to accept F-1 non-immigrant foreign students to its programs.
