University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business:
The GSB alumni network comprises more than 18 000 past GSB students including over 11 000 alumni in South Africa and 7 000 alumni in 68 countries around the world. The alumni body constitutes a dynamic networking forum both for current students and the alumni themselves. GSB alumni hold key positions in some of the world’s leading companies. Well-known GSB alumni include Arthur Mashiatshidi (CEO Decorum Capital Partners), Sandile Zungu (chair of Denel), Kim MacFarland (chief operating officer of Investec Asset Management), Mike Page (Dean, Rotterdam School of Management) and Ian Kantor (CEO of Insinger De Beaufort). A number of GSB alumni have also gone on to start their own successful businesses and are now playing a vital role in supporting and encouraging more recent graduates to follow in their footsteps.
The GSB has 22 resident faculty. Many are internationally acclaimed both as researchers and teachers. Others are closely involved in national and regional issues and play leading roles in policy formulation and implementation. All are dedicated and gifted individuals who contribute directly to the GSB's reputation for excellence.
It is part of the culture of the School that faculty members go the extra mile in preparing, teaching, mentoring and counselling students. It is the norm for them to be in the School at night or over weekends to work with students.
The GSB's core faculty is supplemented by upward of 70 visiting academics and executives from all over the world. Their presence adds to the wealth of expertise and depth of knowledge that is available to students.
Both students and graduates rate the GSB network highly and it is estimated that students finding work – particularly internationally – typically do so through alumni contacts. Alumni are a living advertisement for the quality of the GSB both by their proficiency in their chosen careers and the enthusiasm they express for their GSB experience. The school also has a very active Career Services office which facilitates relationships between companies, alumni and students with the view of unlocking job opportunities for students.
