The Instituto Intercultural del Caribe (IIC) is the Spanish section of the German-Dominican Language and Culture Institute EDASE, founded in 1994. We are one of the largest institutions offering Spanish classes to foreigners in the Dominican Republic.
Our language students can choose between two locations: One school is in the country's capital Santo Domingo, a Caribbean-style metropolis with more than 2.5 million inhabitants. The other school is on the north coast of the country in the small sea town of Sosua, famous for its incredible beaches and variety of water sports activities.
Students can also divide their courses between both locations. Thus, we offer them the opportunity to learn Spanish in two completely different locations and by doing so, to discover the country in its splendid diversity.
We are a privately owned and independent enterprise under German management. The staff is composed of Dominicans, Europeans, and Americans. From the beginning, there has existed a close collaboration with prestigious local institutions in the fields of culture, education, and tourism.
Promoting exchange:
We feel teaching a language is a communicative process and should focus on usage in everyday life. The more the learning process takes place in the context of an intercultural exchange, the higher is the learning success and the improvement of communicative skills.
We, therefore, consider it essential that our students learn Spanish by having direct contact with native speakers and by using their newly acquired language skills on site
– from day one on.
The familial, personal atmosphere at our schools with their cafeterias, their gardens and terraces provide the proper setting to easily meet new people. We want to invite our students to start their intercultural exchange, become acquainted with new friends, share experiences and plan joint activities.
Because learning a new language should be fun in the first place!
Through our partners we are accredited for academic credits at several US universities.
In Germany, our two-week Spanish intensive group courses are recognized as Bildungsurlaub (Accredited Language Study Abroad for Professionals).

Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, is located on the south coast of the country on the Caribbean Sea. With a population of more than 2.5 million inhabitants it is a vibrant and lively metropo-lis where are many things to be seen and to be discovered.
One encounters the historical face of the city in its colonial district, the Zona Colonial, which has been carefully restored to retain its original charm. In 1990, UNESCO declared it World Heritage Site. Many early 16th-century buildings bear witness that Santo Domingo is the oldest city in the New World, where the settlement of all the Americas began. In recent years many young gallery owners, fashion designers, restaurants, and clubs have discovered the Zona Colonial and set up business there.
Santo Domingo is also a modern, driven city. Colorful, lively markets invite you to discover the treasures of the country: hand-wrapped cigars, jewelry made out of Larimar or Amber and other local handcrafts on sale virtually everywhere. Or you could shop in the cool elegance of a modern shopping center.
At night the city trembles to the rhythm of Merengue and Bachata, the musical soul of the Dominicans, sounding out of numerous bars, cafes, and restau-rants. Here, in the multicultural mix of Spanish-American, African, and European influences, the modern and the historical Santo Domingo unite again.
