New International School, Tokyo:
At New International School, located in Tokyo, east Japan, the children learn bilingually in both English and Japanese through team-taught multiage classes; a resource and thematic-based curriculum; and a combination of whole group, individual, center-based and project-based activities.
The mission of the school is to develop social and academic skills in both English and Japanese in team-taught well-resourced multiage classrooms, in the research-based recognition that bilingual and multiage education are good for children. The children retain and/or develop self-motivation, a healthy self- image, and appreciation of others by virtue of what they are able to learn and accomplish within a school environment designed for their enjoyment and success.
Preschool Programme for children aged 3 and 4; Primary School Programme from Grades K to 5; Middle School/High School Programme from Grades 6 to 9.
The entire program is directed to the development of life skills: collaboration, teamwork, mutual respect and appreciation, inquiry, problem-solving, attention to audience, and effective use of language, as well as technical skills and academic and artistic inspiration. All of these skills are best developed in a multiage environment.
The curriculum is always in the process of development based on the latest research and experience in teaching and learning, especially as regards multilingual and multiage education: Administrators and teachers are constantly updating their knowledge through the professional development opportunities offered, and Information sessions, orientations and seminar opportunities are provided for parents as well, so that they may be better informed about their child’s education.
* The school takes advantage of its location through several fieldtrips during the year, including overnight trips for the children from Grade 3 up.
* All of the children Grade 3 and above learn the violin by the Suzuki method.
* Mandarin Chinese is offered as a third language from Kindergarten through Grade 9.
Parents are assured of their child’s progress along developmentally based continuums, through parent seminars, student-led conferences, anecdotal reports and portfolios.
