Hargrave's military program is designed to present an environment in which a Cadet may gain a sense of honor, commitment and fidelity. The daily exposure of a military environment assists Cadets in developing self-discipline, character, ethics, team building and leadership.

Upon graduation from Hargrave, graduates are not expected to enter into any military service.

At Hargrave, a Cadet's daily schedule keeps them employed and engaged in activity throughout the day. The schedule requires self-discipline on behalf of each Cadet. An average Cadet day includes three academic courses, three meals, three formations, athletics time, tutorials, company time and study hall.

Academics:
Hargrave’s educational philosophy is anchored in a traditional college preparatory curriculum aimed at enabling critical thinking and inspiring a desire to learn within a diverse student body.

Grades 7-9:
The CIS classroom experience is a combination of single- and team-teaching in the academic fundamentals of Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. This maximizes the student’s classroom experience by providing access to instructors with the greatest expertise in their field of study.

The core subjects are presented in a thematic approach, which not only taps into student interests, but allows students to see the value of learning about each subject. Additional elective subjects in the areas of art, music, foreign language and character development are also a part of the student’s schedule.

Grades 10-12 and Postgraduate Year:
Students in grades 10-12 experience an educational program that is designed to prepare them to attend the right college for them based on their academic ability, interest, andImage of Military Boarding School for Boys in Virginia needs. Students take six subjects on a schedule similar to that found on a college campus, attending classes in three subjects per day, alternating those subjects with the following day.

The Academic day also allows students time to meet with their teachers should they have questions or difficulties in a particular subject area. The night prior to class, all students are required to attend study hall, which is proctored by the Hargrave faculty and staff.

Hargrave Post-Graduate (PG) Cadets focus on critical English and math SAT/ACT skills in their first post-high school year. Classes are carefully selected to develop core skills and to challenge students in preparation for their freshman year in college.

Students may work within NCAA guidelines to improve their Core Course GPA in addition to working to improve their SAT/ACT scores. Success in their post graduate courses also strengthens their high school transcript as they apply to colleges of their choice.
Hargrave offers two types of diplomas, a Hargrave Diploma and a Hargrave Advanced Studies Diploma.
