Silverline Montessori:
Sliverline Montessori, located in Pearland, Texas, is an independently owned & operated Montessori School offering programs to children aged six months to six years. Montessori is a teaching methodology based on the natural learning processes of children. Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician, developed the method more than 90 years ago. Dr. Montessori used the term "the absorbent mind" to describe how a young child learns in a comfortable and stimulating environment. Within such an environment, a child becomes absorbed in work, developing concentration, independence, and self-discipline.
Dr. Maria Montessori began her career as an educator in the early 1900’s. Being a scientist as well as an educator, she observed and responded to the children’s natural desire to learn. Montessori experimented with and “formalized learning environments in which children could be grouped within developmental age spans, as they are naturally found within a family or neighborhood.” In this model “communities of learners” are formed, in which older students mentor younger students and a caring dynamic is formed. As Benjamin Franklin once said “Tell me and I forget, Teach me and I remember, Involve me and I learn.” Even when the learning work is hard and full of concentration and much mental energy exerted, it feels good…it feels like play.
The Classroom:
The classroom, called a "Montessori environment," generally has 20-25 students, a teacher, and an aide. Each environment has about a dozen open shelves arranged around the classroom to create separate and defined areas of study. Each area has a large set of perfectly complete didactic materials and lessons. Children freely choose their tasks, as long as they know how to utilize the material. If they do not, they may ask for an individual presentation. The classroom is divided into four main areas: practical life, sensorial, math, and language. Parts of each room are also devoted to art, science and geography. The classroom is scaled to the size of the children and arranged with materials and activities that are enticing and enjoyable.
The Infant Program:
A Montessori infant program is designed to meet the needs of the infant during the important sensory motor period of development. Infancy is a periods of rapid change physically, emotionally, socially, cognitively and neurologically. Therefore, it is important that the environment for the child be physically safe, cognitively challenging and emotionally nurturing.
