Sacred Heart School:
Located in Glendale, in the west-central portion of the borough of Queens in New York City, Sacred Heart School is a private early childhood through Grade 8 Catholic school with three and four year old programs, primary, middle grades as well as junior high. We follow all New York State and Diocesan Standards in educating our children. Students receive comprehensive instruction in reading, language arts, writing, math, science, social studies, religion, computer technology, Spanish, art, music, library skills etc.
Three Year Old Program:
The three-year-old program is designed to meet the developmental needs of young children. It provides spiritual, emotional, social, physical and intellectual growth. The program is comprised of religion, language, social development, play, art, music, motor skill development and math readiness. The nursery teacher and aide work lovingly with their students to provide a feeling of safety for their young charges while providing learning that is hands-on and fun.
Four Year Old Program:
The four-year-old program provides a nurturing environment where children discover the many joys of learning. Our Pre-K teachers provide not only an academically rich program, but help to make the children’s first experience with school a positive one. Special activities are worked into the program and include cooking opportunities, field trips, community service projects, and special holiday celebrations.
Kindergarten:
Our Kindergarten program is a full-day, five day a week program. Each class has a teacher and an aide. The academic focus is on primary education, and while the classroom is academically motivated, the teachers are ever mindful of the social and spiritual growth of these young students. The teachers strive to provide a safe and nurturing environment where children can discover the joy of learning.
We are committed to trying to provide the best learning environment possible for our students. We believe that this greatly helps our kindergarten students to achieve and become confident in their abilities, which is an important first step in their academic success throughout the educational process.
Primary Grades:
Students in grades 1, 2, and 3 are instructed in a self-contained classroom environment. The dedicated teachers in these grades boost student achievement with fun and motivating activities that help to make learning a lifelong passion. They spice up their lessons with techniques that make learning come alive, but are ever mindful that their primary responsibility is to instill in each student an appreciation of their own worth as a child of God and the recognition of each person’s uniqueness as an individual.
Middle Grades:
Grades 4 and 5 feature a departmental type of instruction where a team teaching approach is used. Math, Science, Social Studies and Reading/Language Arts are taught by specialists in these areas. These teachers move from room to room, as students get acclimated to departmental learning. It is a valuable tool in preparing students for a true departmental system while giving them the advantage of instruction by teachers who are best equipped to teach certain subject content. Religion is taught by each student’s homeroom teacher.
Junior High:
The Junior High is made up of grades 6. 7 and 8. They are departmentalized and receive instruction from faculty who are specialists in their fields.
As these students receive daily instruction in reading, language arts, writing, math, science, social studies, religion, penmanship, computer technology, Spanish, art, music, library skills, physical education, health and public speaking as well as special content subjects. Their teachers are always aware of the important role they play in helping to prepare students for the challenges they will face in life. They teach them of the importance of ethics and integrity. They address media awareness and the issue of peer pressure. They teach students to care and to develop lifelong social skills.
