The Beginning School program is based on the belief that learning at its best is collaborative and interactive. Children learn through play by exploring, building, and creating. Teachers work to create an environment that extends children's understanding of conceptual knowledge and develops both social and physical skills. The teachers carefully design the daily curriculum to nurture each child's mental, physical, and emotional growth.

Students in the Beginning School go on field trips, have library time, visit the woodshop, and participate in physical education and music classes. The classrooms provide a caring atmosphere where children from ages four to six are able to develop to the full potential of their imagination and ingenuity.

The link between freedom and responsibility is a theme that runs through Lower School life. Early on, children learn that with freedom comes an ability to take risks and to be responsible for their own learning. Children are given choices, and are expected to behave in a responsible way toward others and their environment. Informal and respectful relationships among students and teachers foster an atmosphere of care, open communication, and trust that influences the student beyond the Lower School.

Middle School provides a transition from the homeroom atmosphere of the Lower School to the departmental configuration of the Upper School. The curriculum challenges students with a vigorous academic program combined with an emphasis on creativity and physical and emotional well being.

The core of the Middle School academic program includes studies in English, math, science, and social studies, as well as ongoing instruction in modern language, art, music, and physical education. Frequent field trips, service learning projects, and interscholastic sports programs enhance the regular classroom experience.

Upper School Courses - Grades Nine through Twelve:
- English
- Arts
- History
- Computer Science
- Mathematics
- Modern Languages
- Science
- Physical Education and Health

Catlin Gabel’s Upper School program fully embraces the idea of “inspired learning leading to responsible action.” Students are trusted to take their learning seriously, to behave according to ethical standards, and to be partners with their teachers in the learning process. The atmosphere is informal, respectful, lively, and forward looking. Work is balanced with play, and critical thinking with creative thinking. Students are encouraged to take risks and to learn from their mistakes, and the student body is entrusted with considerable power in the running of the community.
