Brazil in Chicago, located in Lincoln Square, Chicago’s most diverse neighborhood, Illinois, is a Portuguese language school offering private tutoring and group classes, at your place or at our center. All our professionals are native speakers, hold college degrees in humanities and have years of experience teaching languages. But above all, they love to teach! Our students come to us for many reasons, and once they are here they become part of this big Brazilian family in Chicago.
About Us:
Brazil in Chicago was founded in January, 2006 by Marcelo Jarmendia. After teaching languages in Brazil and the United States for over six years, he decided to open in Chicago a school that would not only teach his native language, but also share with Chicagoans his passion for his culture. Thanks to his relations, he was able to build a network of professionals working with all aspects of Brazilian culture, allowing our students to venture into capoeira, samba, music, and Brazilian cuisine. After three years in business and with over 450 students of 35 nationalities, we have now grown to three classrooms and a study room/library. And Marcelo is no longer alone: Marco, Maristela, Carla and Iris are helping him to spread the language and culture of Brazil and in Chicago.
Which is better for me: private lessons or group classes?
It really depends on what kind of person you are. Some students are shy and feel easily intimidate by others. Others feel better learning from other people’s experience and mistakes. In the end it comes to how much time and money you have available. Ideally the best way to go is private lessons in the beginning, for a solid foundation of grammar and pronunciation, then followed by group classes to get exposed to other people’s experience, thus expanding your vocabulary.
How do I know if I am progressing? Do you grade your students?
You will know you are progressing when the instructor advances you to the next level. After requests from our students we started grading them so they can see what needs to be improved.

Professor Jie Wang teaches in the Department of Managerial Studies and the MBA Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago. A native of Beijing, Dr. Wang has also taught Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Chinese as well as independent study courses in Chinese language and culture at the University of North Dakota and the University of Illinois at Chicago. In addition to teaching, he manages Chinese Language Service, whose Chinese-learning and translation clients range from multinational corporations to individuals. Professor Hong Chen, also from Beijing, teaches Chinese language, film, and literature at Loyola University Chicago and previously taught Chinese at the University of North Dakota. Besides teaching regular university courses, Dr. Wang and Prof. Chen offer corporate training as well as group and private lessons in Mandarin.
