Applied Scholastics Academy San Diego:
Applied Scholastics Academy San Diego is an independent, co-educational, non-religious school for pre-K through to sixth grade in La Mesa in San Diego County. We serve families in La Mesa, La Jolla, Muirlands West, Soledad South, Bay Ho, Sorrento Valley and surrounding communities. Applied Scholastics Academies are part of the Applied Scholastics Network, a group of independent schools sharing uniquely developed curriculum and teaching methods based on the works of L. Ron Hubbard. Each teacher is trained in Study Technology and in how to communicate effectively with children.

Children may enroll in this school as early as four years old, assuming the student will become five years old sometime during the current school year.

Our Philosophy:

We believe that all children can learn and be successful when they are provided with the proper methods of learning and study – something rarely taught in schools. We are against authoritarian teaching methods and see too much stress as being detrimental to the educational progress of the child.

To that end, we have established a quality assurance division that is there to assist students in trouble or falling behind, not as a disciplinary procedure, but utilizing educational tools to resolve the problems. These tools are known as Study Technology. Study Technology is an approach to teaching and learning developed by author and humanitarian, L. Ron Hubbard.

Our Mission:

To enhance the native ambitions of children by equipping them with proven learning tools, instilling an eagerness to learn and teaching them how to be self-learners, resulting in graduates who are successful in their chosen paths of study, work and life.

To teach children how to learn so they can resolve their own learning difficulties and know how to get help when they need it. Our stress is always toward a purposeful understanding and ability to use the information they are learning.

Education Programs:
- Preschool; Pre-Kindergarten; Kindergarten; Elememtary School; Lower School & Middle School to 6th Grade.

* Subjects include
:  Study Skills, English and Literature, Science, Math, Geography, History, Art, Music, Reading, Life Skills and Physical Education.

Individual Programs for Children:

Each child is tested on his / her basics using a test that requires one-on-one assessment to work out the strengths and weaknesses in reading, sentence comprehension, spelling and math. This data along with information gathered on their overall educational progress is used to construct an individualized program for each child.

One of the tools used to enable a child to progress individually so he/she is not held back by the rest of the class is a “checksheet.” A checksheet consists of a set of assignments, both theory and practical, that a student carries out in order to learn and apply information in a specific topic so as to accomplish a named purpose.

The Applied Scholastics Academy Program Emphasizes:

* Early education in the 3 Rs
* Hands-on learning, practical application
* Ensuring 100% understanding
* Teaching Study Skills so that the children become self-learners
* Individualized attention
* Self-paced learning
* Advancement based on demonstrated competency
* A rich curriculum, including specialized teachers providing lessons in computers, music, astronomy and science.

Teaching Styles:
Teaching is not restricted to one approach. We consider it important for children to be able to study by themselves, in teams and learn through live communication with the teacher. The most important factor in each of these is to combine the theory and ideas with action and visuals so that children do not just try and memorize facts, but get experience with the subject for themselves so they can evaluate and use the information.

What Makes This School Unique?

Photo of Private School in San Diego County, CAThis school is built on the premise that all children can learn. They all have great potential and start off life with great interest in learning. If all children have a purpose for the subjects being learned, along with the proper tools for recognizing barriers to learning and how to remedy them, they can be more responsible for their own learning situation and maintain their interest in the subjects they want to know about.

"It is of vital importance that the quality of education be revitalized and improved, as man is as able as he can learn and know, it is urgent that a workable learning technology is available to him." - L. Ron Hubbard wrote to Applied Scholastics in its formative stages.

L. Ron Hubbard provided a workable approach to learning for use in any educational setting that is used by the teachers and taught to the children. It is a common-sense and codified approach to teaching and learning any subject and most importantly gets results when applied. Add to that our use of individualized programs for the children and recognized successful teaching styles, then this school has unique features that are definitely worth finding out about.
