Port Elizabeth is situated on Nelson Mandela Bay in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, and is part of the Nelson Mandela Metropole. It is a major harbour city, traditionally linked to the motor industry and agriculture. The city is a popular holiday destination for South Africans, and is growing in popularity as a tourist destination: it boasts beautiful, safe beaches, friendly inhabitants, good infrastructure and plentiful accommodation, as well as access to malaria-free game viewing in the Addo National Park, one of the country’s top national parks, and numerous private game parks and nature reserves.
As a harbour city, it has strong international trade links and many foreign companies have offices or branches in the metropolitan area – making it an ideal location for employees to study English while doing practical in-company training. The area is presently experiencing substantial commercial growth with the development of the Coega Industrial Development Zone, which is attracting foreign investors, as well as considerable growth in tourism.
The institute is located in Summerstrand. Students have easy access to pubs, coffee shops, restaurants and accommodation, while the beaches and Port Elizabeth’s “The Boardwalk” entertainment area are nearby. PE’s two main golf courses are a short drive away.
The city has a good airport, and is a gateway to the Garden Route and South Africa’s own “outback” area, the Karoo. Travel between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth is easy; the N2 national road links the two cities, with plenty of sightseeing on the way.
