Mountlands English Language School, Devon:
Welcome to the family run Mountlands English Language School, where you can learn English in Exmouth, Devon, South West England. Mountlands English school was started in answer to a demand for a quality, upmarket English language school here in Devon, where students are ensured the best teaching in the friendliest surroundings, and superior accommodation. Study English at the school in the morning, and enjoy fun activities in the afternoon. With us, you will not only improve your English language, but will also have a fantastic holiday on the beautiful East Devon coast!
General English:
The General English Course consists of 15 hours tuition per week and we aim to help you improve your spoken fluency, accuracy and confidence. We also focus on improving your written English with grammar exercises and written work. You will be given daily homework, to be completed in the evening for the next day. During high season, there are classes at all levels from Elementary to Advanced. The maximum class size is 15, although it is unusual for the class to be bigger than 10.
The minimum age for the course is 16, but most of our General English course students are aged between 25 and 50. Classes take place every morning from 9.00 until 12.30, Monday to Friday. On your first morning, there is a welcome session, and you will be tested, so your lessons will not begin until 11.15am.
The afternoons and evenings are free for you to do your homework, catch up with new friends, or explore the local area. We take all our adult General English Course students out for a pub lunch every Friday during low season.
Intensive English:
Our Intensive English course is for those who want to really focus on the language side of their holiday in Exmouth. The course follows the General English course in the morning plus an additional 2 hours lessons each afternoon, in groups of no more than 8, but usually only 4 students. These mini groups really give you the opportunity to speak, and practice your fluency in English.
Topics change every day, and business English can be focused on this class, if that is what you are looking for. We will tailor the course to suit your needs. Please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your requirements. And of course, you will receive a certificate at the end of the course.
One to One Lessons:
Our One to One lessons are the most effective way to improve your English in a short period of time. One teacher, one student - your English will truly improve with this level of intense learning. One to One lessons are only available in the afternoon as a supplement to our General English Course.
Summer School in July and August for 14-17 olds:
‘English conversation classes in the morning, followed by a fully inclusive programme of sports, social activities and excursions every afternoon.’
At Mountlands Summer School, we focus on English conversational classes. We insist on all our students speaking English within the lessons – and we operate a ‘Red Card’ scheme. Three yellow cards for speaking your own language in class, and you’re out! (the student is asked to leave the room until the next lesson begins). We ask that all parents support this system before you agree to your child attending our school. We have found with experience that this is the best way to encourage students to speak English in class, and it really helps to improve their English.
You will spend 3 hours having English conversation classes in the morning. We believe that the more fun we make the classes, the more you will learn! So do not worry about being bored in lessons – we balance all classes with a good mix of grammar and games, to encourage even the shyest students to speak.
Unlike other schools, our teachers help with the afternoon activities to ensure that the learning of English continues well beyond the classroom. In the afternoon, there is a local based activity, such as mini golf, beach games, go karting or bowling. Every Saturday, we offer a full day excursion to a local attraction. Many students enjoy visiting Dartmoor, or the historical towns of Plymouth and Totnes. Twice a week we offer an evening activity – skittles, karaoke, disco... A time to meet up with other students, relax, and chat about the week’s events!
