Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) Course:
The CELTA course is the original "TEFL" course and provides initial training leading to a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA). It is intended for those without previous experience who wish to enter the profession and for teachers with no previous training in this field.
Success in the Certificate has enabled many candidates to obtain their first teaching position: the course is highly regarded by employers as providing sound initial training and a strong basis from which to develop as a teacher of English.
The CELTA course covers the following syllabus:
- Language Analysis and Awareness
- The Learner, the Teacher and the Teaching/Learning Context
- Planning for Effective Teaching
- Classroom Management Skills
- Teaching Procedures and Techniques
- Resources and Materials
- Professional Development
- Classroom Observation
- Teaching Practice
Teaching Practice:
Teaching practice is an integral part of the course. This is organised in small groups of 5-6 trainees with volunteer students at two or three different levels. After each teaching practice session an evaluation of the session is led by a course tutor. Trainees are expected to liase within their groups outside course hours in order to plan teaching practice classes, according to guidelines provided by course tutors.
Cambridge Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults (DELTA) Course:
The Cambridge Diploma (DELTA) is the most prestigious and widely recognised British qualification in English Language Teaching. It is intended for candidates who have substantial experience of teaching English either in the UK or abroad.
A number of UK universities are now offering credits and/or exemptions on their MA and other courses for those who have obtained their DELTA.
Entry Requirements:
Candidates are expected to be graduates or to have qualified teacher status. Some basic ELT training, for example the CELTA or its equivalent, is considered essential.
As a rough guide, two years' broad and full-time experience of teaching adult classes is the minimum prerequisite in terms of teaching experience.
Syllabus:
The DELTA course aims to ensure a balance between the demands of practical application and understanding of the theoretical background. As well as a detailed consideration of key theoretical issues (see the Syllabus Overview), it includes classroom observation and supervised, evaluated teaching practice.
Course Design:
The part-time course operates two mornings a week over approximately 20 weeks (a total of 120 hours); the full-time course lasts eight weeks with a daily schedule of three hours' input and two hours' teaching practice.
Participants on both the part-time and the full-time course have an extended written task to complete and examination practice tasks for the period between the end of the course and the written examination. In both cases, the work load is heavy and candidates are advised not to take on commitments that might prejudice their chances of participating fully in the course.
Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Young Learners:
A qualification designed for candidates with little or no experience of teaching who wish to learn how to teach young learners in the 8-13 age group.
Course Content:
- Language analysis and awareness for teaching English language to young learners
- Young learners and the learning context
- Young learners' motivations and the roles of the teacher and the learner
- The principles and practice of lesson planning for effective teaching of young learners
- Classroom management skills; procedures and techniques for teaching young learners in language schools
- Resources and materials for use with young learners for language teaching, testing and reference
- Guidelines and careers advice for candidates' future development as professionals in this field
- Extra sessions on younger (5-7) and older (14-16) learners.
- Observation of experienced teachers teaching young learners.
- Teaching Practice with classes of young learners.
CELT YL Extension Course:
Cambridge CELT extension course for teaching Young Learners. An add-on course for teachers who are already CELTA qualified but who have little or no experience of teaching children.
Teaching Very Young Learners:
The six sessions on this course look at teaching English to the very young (5-7 year olds).
We also offer a range of online TEFL courses and TEFL workshops. For further information, including dates and fees, please contact us quickly via our Contact Page.
