Doing an online business degree course:
Many universities and other educational
institutions now provide business degrees online
or via distance learning. There are many
advantages to completing your business degree in
this way. Your lecture notes and assignments are
downloaded from the school’s website or posted
to you. You can work at your own pace and
schedule your study time around your other
commitments.
This means you do not have to
sacrifice valuable family time or give up your
full time employment. This is also a good option
for those who cannot attend a course in person
due to distance or disability.
Choosing a course:
A business degree provides graduates with a
solid foundation in basic skills and knowledge
relating to key areas of business. You can
enhance your chances for promotion in your
current job or you might want to change career
paths completely. There are a wide variety of
business degrees available online offering
various combinations of subjects.
To ensure you
select the best one for your requirements, you
need to be sure what your goals and expectations
are. For example, if you are completing this
course with a view to starting up your own
business, marketing might be of more importance
to you than human resources. You should
therefore look for courses that most closely
meet your needs.
What is involved:
It usually takes four years to achieve a degree
in business through full-time study. Online
courses are generally divided into modules which
you can complete at your own pace so you can
complete your degree at a faster or slower pace.
You will need to allow an average of twenty
hours per week to study. Most online business
degrees will cover the following broad areas in
some form: Finance; Human Resource Management;
Management Skills; Economics; Marketing;
Business Information Systems; Legal Studies.
Accreditation:
To ensure a high standard of education, you
should select an accredited course.
Accreditation from the Association to Advance
Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB
International) is considered the highest
standard of accreditation in the US. Only 25% of
US business schools achieve this accreditation.
A degree from one of these institutions will be
highly regarded in the workplace following
graduation. Other accrediting bodies are The
Association of Collegiate Business Schools and
Programs (ACBSP) and The Council for Higher
Education Accreditation (CHEA).
Other US organizations offer accreditation to
institutions based on their geographic location.
If you are unsure whether the institution you
would like to study with is accredited, feel
free to call them and ask them. You should also
ask them to confirm the length of time they are
accredited for, as accreditation is often
granted only for a specific period of time.
National and regional accrediting bodies
maintain a list of schools that are accredited.

Career Options:
Following graduation, you can apply your
newfound managerial skills and business
knowledge in your current position to build on
the success you have already achieved in your
career. A basic business degree would allow a
graduate to enter middle management positions.
Graduates can also go on to specialize in a
particular area such as finance, marketing,
e-business, supply chain management etc. Many
continue to earn an MBA or a PhD in business
allowing for further career advancement. |
