MJA Language Ltd:
MJA Language run high quality summer English language courses for young people in popular locations in England, UK. These centres are situated in the historic and vibrant cities of York, Durham, Stamford and Manchester. We have a small friendly atmosphere and as a family business, offer an extremely personal service. We have students from all over Europe who come to learn English in a relaxed and fun environment. We deal solely with groups and we offer residential or family accommodation.
Didactic Programme
We offer 15 hours teaching per week. Class sizes are no more than 15 and the average class size is 13. There are three hours of lessons per weekday morning. If a group arrive mid-week they will still complete the full 15 hours by having an extra afternoon session on one day. Very often this will be in the form of a town trail organised by their teachers to avoid spending too long in the classroom.
There are no lessons on Saturday or Sunday.
The levels are established on the first teaching day by a written placement test. This is followed by an oral lesson where the teacher assesses the oral competence of each student against an established set of criteria. The standard course offers 15 hours of tuition per week. The levels we offer are based on the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for languages and are as follows: Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Good Intermediate, Near Advanced
Each class is taught by two teachers who alternate after the first lesson: lessons are one and a half hours long with a 30 minute break in between. All our teachers are qualified, experienced and are chosen for their enthusiasm and commitment. They have access to a library of varied EFL materials and whilst following a specially designed course, are free to supplement and be creative in accordance with students' needs.
The focus of the course is on communication: broadening students' active and passive knowledge and skills and increasing their confidence in using English. We aim to solidify and build on students' existing knowledge of English and to push them into new areas of the language through exposure to mother tongue teachers and varied teaching methods.
Cultural & Social Programme
Weekday afternoons are dedicated to sport and cultural excursions. The sport on offer varies according to the school. English staff supervise sport and all games and competitions are organised by an Activity Leader.
Afternoon and Saturday excursions are to local places of interest, or further afield to discover the wider area in which students are staying.
In the evenings, activities are organised to entertain, amuse and stimulate further use of English. These include: discos with a theme, treasure hunts, quizzes, word games (e.g. Pictionary), talent contests, ghost tours, fashion shows, Blind Date etc.
The English staff are mainly resident and are therefore involved in all extra-curricular activities to give a family atmosphere to our centres. We work on the premise that when staff and students interact well outside the classroom, production inside the classroom is greatly increased.
We pride ourselves on offering students the chance to learn English in England in a relaxed and comfortable environment: one that combines education with recreation and culture in what we hope will be a memorable stay!
Homestay
In our centres in York and Stamford we offer both residential and homestay accommodation. We carefully select our families from the surrounding areas and visit them regularly. The host family will treat the student as a full member of the household. They will eat together and share common living areas. Students will often be accommodated with students of other nationalities but there are never more than four students per household.
