Brentwood College School, Vancouver Island:
Brentwood is a coeducational college-preparatory boarding school (located in Mill Bay, 30 miles north of Victoria, British Columbia) offering superb modern facilities for academics, athletics, and the arts in a pristine Vancouver Island setting, thus providing a remarkable boarding school environment. With students from over 30 different countries, the Brentwood tripartite programme puts academics at the core of the curriculum, while creating extensive opportunities for all students to participate in athletics and the arts.
Co-educational Day & Boarding Programmes for Grades 9-12:
Academic Curriculum:Exceeding prescribed B.C. provincial learning outcomes, the Brentwood curriculum includes 20 Advanced Placement courses. All Brentwood students must take mathematics, a foreign language (with some exceptions), humanities, and at least one science up to and including Grade 11. Students are required to study English through to Grade 12.
Elective streams in the senior school include challenging programmes in
- Science and mathematics (physics, chemistry, biology, geology, calculus);
- English and humanities (literature, history, geography, psychology, art history, global studies, philosophy);
- Business and Technology (information technology, marketing, entrepreneurship, economics);
- Modern languages (French, Spanish, and the opportunity to challenge the German, Japanese, and Mandarin provincial exams).
Academic skill development emphasizes critical thinking, writing, reading, using technology effectively, and working individually and as part of a team.
Fine Arts:
The arts are not optional extras at Brentwood. The arts are fun, and there are compelling educational reasons why all students participate.
At Brentwood, we believe the arts promote creativity, self-expression, and teamwork. The arts help students visualize an idea and see a complex process through to reality. They teach patience, humility, and confidence. They enrich the imagination and challenge the mind. They provide balance and perspective. The arts create culture and civilize us.
All Brentonians get involved in the creative process, both as participants and as members of the audience. Opportunities abound for beginners through to experienced performing and visual artists who wish to specialize. Arts courses run for the full year and most students choose two arts each year.
Sports:While some Brentonians realize the Olympic dream, all Brentwood students learn the value of lifelong physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Pick your sport. Rowing, rugby, basketball, field hockey, ice hockey, volleyball, tennis, soccer, squash, cross country running, golf, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, and climbing: Brentwood offers them all, from beginners to advanced.
Through team sports, especially, students develop valuable skills and attitudes, including commitment, endurance, confidence, humility, and teamwork. They make friends, playing and travelling with their peers.
All students are involved in three afternoons of physical activity, with some competitive athletes involved all six afternoons. Different sports are scheduled each term, depending on the season of play. Every student has the opportunity to participate in team and individual sports at his or her level.
Brentwood teams participate in the Independent Schools Association (ISA) of BC tournaments, national championships (rowing), international tours (basketball, rugby, volleyball, rowing) and in local, mid-Island and Island leagues, with senior teams regularly qualifying for the BC provincial championship tournaments.
