Lessons and materials:
Your teacher should explain to you what you will be covering in classes, each week and we hope that you will discuss your study needs and language needs so that we can help you improve the way you need. In class you will be expected to work in different ways; sometimes the teacher will talk to you as a class and sometimes you may be asked to work with other students. To make sure you progress well you should join in with all the class activities and listen to you teacher. If you do not understand you should ask for help – we are here to support you.
Your teacher will tell you what book to use. You can buy this book from the International Bookshop near the school, or you can borrow a school book. If you borrow a school book you will have to return it in good condition when it is finished. Sometimes you may not use a main course book and the teacher will use a range of alternative material.
As well as your course book you should make sure that you bring to class a pen and a notebook or paper kept in a file. You may have some class time to look at study skills. The school has many English-English dictionaries, but it is a good idea to buy your own copy so you can use it at any time.
Outside of class
To progress well you should take advantage of being in England. You can read and listen to English all around you as well as making sure that you speak as much as possible with native speakers or students from other countries in English. You can use your dictionaries to check new language and teachers are always happy to help you if you have questions about language you have heard in your host family, in the street, on the bus, in shops and so on.
In the student common room you have access to the internet and there are lists on the wall of useful websites for developing your English
Homestay
Living with a family is an excellent way of learning about British life and customs. Families are carefully inspected and selected by our Accommodation Officer. During the academic year (September – June) we offer single rooms with breakfast and dinner daily. We make every effort to match students needs to what our families can offer, but cannot guarantee that all requests can be met. Some families may be 3-4 kms or more from the school and may best be reached by public bus or by bicycle. In Cambridge in the summer adults live in single rooms with breakfast and dinner daily.
Residential Accommodation
Select English, Cambridge owns four Halls of Residence all within easy walking distance of its school in Station Road. They offer a safe, quiet environment. Each Hall takes only about 12-14 students and they have a family atmosphere. They have twin rooms and a few single rooms. Some of the rooms have their own shower. Each hall has a computer with internet access where students can take some time to write their emails or surf the internet.
