Location:

Image of Music Education School in Los Angeles, CaliforniaThe Colburn School moved to its current address at 200 South Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles in 1998. At that time the School provided instruction in the performing arts to the community of Los Angeles. The 55,000 square foot building at the Grand Avenue location was designed to support the various program areas of the School such as music, dance and drama.

In Fall 2003 the School began operating the degree-granting Conservatory of Music alongside the School of Performing Arts. In order to serve both divisions of the School better, in October 2004 the School began a new construction project adjacent to the first building. The new facility includes twelve floors, three underground parking levels, and a top-level mechanical area.

Both buildings together are designed to support the activities of the Colburn School of Performing Arts and the Colburn Conservatory of Music. For ease of reference, the first building, with its entrance on Grand Avenue, is called the Grand Building. The second and newer building, which is bordered on the east side by Olive Street, is called the Olive Building. Several of the School’s public spaces, including Zipper Hall, are available for rental by outside groups.
