The Beacon School:
The Beacon School is an independent, non-profit, co-educational K - 8 international school in Taguig in Metro Manila. Our school is modeled upon the best international educational practice. We are committed to providing a global education of the highest quality, rooted in an understanding of Filipino culture and traditions, to children of all nationalities. The Beacon School is the first educational institution in the Philippines to receive authorization by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) in Switzerland to offer the Middle Years Program (IB-MYP, Grades 6-8). With the authorization of its Primary Years Program (IB-PYP, PS-Grade 5) in 2005, and now its IB-MYP Program in 2007, the Beacon School has the distinction of being the first and only fully IBO authorized educational institution in the Philippines for every level of its academic programmes.
Education Programmes:
- Kindergarten Programme:
This is based on the I.B. Primary Years Programme. It encourages a positive and active learning approach through which children construct meaning from experience. Our programme is geared towards fostering the attitudes which are fundamental to the Primary Years Programme, and towards laying the foundations for the development of the characteristics of the PYP Student Profile.
- Elementary School Programme:
This is also based on the I.B. Primary Years Programme (IB-PYP, PS-Grade 5). This is an international curriculum framework designed for children of Elementary School age and is part of a continuing programme that culminates in the I.B. Diploma in the final two years of high school. The Primary Years Programme focuses upon the total growth of the developing child, in addressing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs, in addition to academic welfare. The PYP combines the best research and practice from schools around the world, offering a comprehensive inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning.
Many subject areas, particularly Social Studies and Science, are focused upon in our PYP theme studies, also known as our Programme of Inquiry. In addition to the PYP themes, the students receive specific instruction in Language Arts, Science and Mathematics. We also offer a strong Philippine History, Culture and Values component as well as Art, Music and Physical Education. The children are also required to choose between Religious Education and World Religion.
- Middle School Programme:
At Grades Six, Seven and Eight, our programme is based on, and follows, the IB Middle Years Programme (IB-MYP, Grades 6-8). This programme builds on the Primary Years Programme, as it embraces the concepts of intercultural awareness, holistic or integrated learning, and communication.
Like the Primary Years Programme, the MYP is based on the best practice and research from around the world. Its structure is based on eight distinct subject areas, enhanced by the fundamental concepts described above, and by the areas of interaction which bind the programme together. The subjects studied at The Beacon School include English, Humanities, Science, Mathematics, Mandarin, Spanish, Art, Music, Drama, Physical Education and Technology.
At Middle School level too, students continue their study of the Filipino language. Grade 6 and 7 students choose between Religious Education and World Religion; Grade 8 students take a course in Ethics. The areas of interaction which permeate each subject area and provide realistic contexts for learning are the Approaches to Learning, Community and Service, Health and Social Education, Human Ingenuity and Environments.
- Extra-Curricular Activities / Sports Programmes:
The extracurricular sports programmess of the school are a continuation of the students’ IB learning experience, promoting the learner profile while enhancing qualities of participation. As part of the students’ educational experience, Beacon School offers a variety of sports programmes after school for all grade levels.
The goal we are committed to achieve is to provide a developmentally appropriate extracurricular sports program that articulates with the curriculum of PYP and MYP Physical Education. As a small school, we cannot provide opportunities for all sports at all levels. We will participate in league play in so far as it is compatible with our philosophy and resources.
