Co-Educational Programs from Kindergarten through Upper School:
Academics- International Baccalaureate Program:
AIS is one of a handful of schools in the world to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) to all its students from four-year-old kindergarten through grade 12.
Students 4K to grade 5 follow the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), which focuses on the development of the whole child inside and outside the classroom. PYP students expereince the inquiry based curriculum in two languages: English and either French, German or Spanish.
Students in grades 6 to 10 follow the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), developing life skills and critical thinking abilities in challenging, interrelated academic courses in preparation for the IB Diploma Programme (DP).
A rigorous, world-renowned two-year program of study for grades 11 and 12, the DP includes college-level instruction, extracurricular and community service requirements, an extended essay and internationally standardized examinations. With 100% of our eleventh and twelfth graders enrolled in the IB Diploma Programme, AIS is one of few schools that can claim full participation in the IBDP. In addition to paving the way for entrance to the finest universities worldwide, AIS prepares students to excel in higher education and beyond.
The IB Learner Profile is a set of clearly defined attributes that describes the whole person as a lifelong learner and forms the foundation of all three IB programs: the PYP, MYP and DP. Through the Learner Profile, the IB aims to develop learners who are Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced, and Reflective.
Primary School Program:
The Primary School consists of two divisions: the Lower Primary School for students from 4K to grade 2, and the Upper Primary School for students from grade 3 to grade 5. Primary School students in both divisions learn the curriculum in two languages: English and either French, German or Spanish.
Over the course of the academic year, they spend approximately 50 percent of their time in English and 50 percent of their time in German, French or Spanish. They become skilled and knowledegable in language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music and physical education.
Middle School Program:
The Middle School serves the developmental needs of students in grades 6 through 8. All students take English, one other modern language, mathematics, social studies and science. Drama, art, music, computer and physical education are also an integral part of the curriculum in the Middle School.
Social studies classes are conducted in English, French, Spanish and German. Language and literature studies are conducted in the students' chosen second languages throughout the Middle and Upper Schools. Students who are bilingual, either by background or by having attended the AIS Primary School, study their second languages at advanced level.
Upper School Program:
The Upper School serves the developmental needs of students in grades 9 through 12. All students take English, one other modern language, mathematics, social studies and science. Drama, art, music, computer and physical education are also an integral part of the curriculum in the Upper School. Language and literature studies are conducted in the students' chosen second languages throughout the Middle and Upper School. Students who are bilingual, either by background or by having attended the AIS Primary School, study their second languages at an advanced level.
Students who speak only English are welcome to apply to the AIS Upper School. We offer intensive language courses from beginner through native speaker levels, and can accommodate the needs of monolingual students.
Students in grade 9 and 10 follow the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), designed to prepare them for the IB Diploma Programme (DP), which they follow in grades 11 and 12.
The Arts Program:
This group includes visual arts, music and theatre, with emphasis placed on practical production by our students and exploration of a range of creative work in a global context. Students are brought into contact with the art forms and aesthetic values of other cultures as well as their own, and are helped to develop perceptions between ideas and art. They are also encouraged to identify particular creative abilities and to master techniques appropriate to that form of expression.
