Our program focuses on the young child’s total development: physical, cognitive, and social/emotional. The developmental goals set forth in this handbook assume a range of abilities within each age group and serve as a model towards which each teacher works during the school year.

While each age group has goals set for it, teachers are encouraged to view simultaneously each child’s unique pattern of growth. From age 14 months through age 5, these developmental goals build; i.e. goals for age 4 include all those for ages 2 and 3 according to the child’s individual abilities.

Our classes are small, so that children can receive individual attention. Under the guidance of a Lead Teacher, our staff plans activities that relate to the deve-lopmental goals established and include experiences in art, crafts, construction with blocks and other building toys, use of manipulatory materials, games, presentation of stories, books, music and rhythm and movement.

Open Door also provides an academic readiness program that includes language arts, math, science, and social studies. These are presented according to a child’s individual level of development.

Open Door’s curriculum is presented in weekly thematic units such as the family, transportation, me, sea life, insects and so on. To complement these thematic units, the children take a number of field trips during the year. Children in the five day classes will follow the same thematic unites; however, children in our two day and three day classes will only occasionally during the year follow the same unit of study as the other classes.
