Course Structure: This course is divided into three Levels (or Stages), each lasting 30 weeks. The whole degree course is credit-rated at 360 credits, with 120 credits at each Level (Stage).
The degree course has three closely interrelated areas of study that are delivered through lectures, project work, workshops, seminars, and assignments. These areas of study are: Technical Studies; Design Studies; Contextual Studies.
- Stage One: During this year, we aim to build your subject knowledge and practical skills. You will be introduced to our brand of studio working and integrated within our community of practice. You will focus on specific product design skills such as 2D & 3D sketching and computing through a series of projects. You will learn workshop skills through working in wood, metal and plastics. In addition, you will build knowledge of design for manufacture, and intellectual skills in areas like semiotics. At the end of the year, you will have a tour of London design studios which aims to give you an insight into the product design industry.
- Stage Two: During this year, you will extend your skills and gain experience in professional contexts through external briefs provided by industry. You will, for instance, be exploring the relationships between product design and branding, and how ideas from outside of the discipline can be used to inform and explore creative design responses. You will have the opportunity to consider and plan your future as a professional practitioner, and to take more responsibility for initiating and managing your own work.
- Stage Three: In this year, you have the chance to combine the creative, entrepreneurial, intellectual and practical capacities that you have developed over the previous two years to forge a product design outcome. This is limited only by the time allocated and your own ambition! You will have a sustained opportunity to pursue your own agenda through writing and design exploration.
The final year closes with a real-world scenario in which you partner an external client to deliver a specific project. This project represents a really useful springboard to professional design practice. Body Shop, Absolut, Kodak, Habitat, Proctor & Gamble and Samsung are among our recent collaborators.
