The University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada is a is a coeducational public research university offering a distance-delivered university-based Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (CERTESL) Program that can be taken from anywhere in the world. Some courses may be taken on campus. Students who complete the on-campus Summer TEFL Intensive at the U of Sask. may be eligible for transfer credit and an application bursary.
The CERTESL (Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language) Program:
The CERTESL Program is a university-based, non-degree program that prepares people to teach the English language professionally. CERTESL offers two streams of study:
Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL):
- Overview of Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)
- TESL Theory and Skill Development,
- TESL/TESD for Aboriginal People
- Materials Selection and Development in Language Teaching, OR
- Literacy in TESL/TESD
- English Grammar and Phonology
- Approaches to Language Teaching, OR ECUR 393.3
- Supervised Practicum OR
- Professional Project
Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL):
- Communicative Language Teaching I
- Communicative Language Teaching II
- Materials Selection and Development in Language Teaching
- Literacy in TESL/TESD
- English Grammar and Phonology
- Approaches to Language Teaching
- Supervised Practicum OR
- Professional Project
Six courses, following one of the above streams of study, must be successfully completed for a student to be awarded the CERTESL Certificate. All of the courses are delivered via distance education using primarily print. Some courses utilize CDs and/or DVDs, necessitating access to CD/DVD playback equipment. You will have the option to take some CERTESL courses with interactivity via computer conferencing, enrolment numbers permitting.
