The Boston Center for Adult Education:
Conveniently located just off the Massachusetts Turnpike in south downtown Boston, the Boston Center for Adult Education offers full and part-time, day and evening English as a second language (ESL) programs from an easily accessible city location. We offer ESL classes for all levels, from beginners to advanced speakers, including TOEFL preparation classes, English pronunciation classes, and English conversation classes.

English as a Second Language Programs (Daily, Weekly & Monthly Classes Available)

English for Beginners
This class is for students who are learning basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English. You will learn how to use basic grammar while speaking and writing by studying the three simple verb tenses: past, present, and future. You will develop your pronunciation by listening, reading, and speaking with the teacher and your classmates.

You will learn vocabulary and phrases that will help you to use public transportation, ask for directions, go shopping, and have basic conversations with English speakers. The goal of this class is to teach you to express yourself and to make your life easier.

Intermediate English
Are you afraid to speak English? This class is for students who can speak English but make frequent mistakes and lack confidence. In this class, you will master the three simple tenses: past, present, and future. You will also begin to master the progressive tenses and learn about the perfect tenses. You will learn about American culture and will build your confidence and improve your pronunciation by teaching your classmates about your culture.

Advanced English
Are you struggling with complex grammar? Are you confused by cultural nuances, American humor, and American culture? Do you want to explore the perfect tenses and master the perfect progressive tenses? This class is designed for English speakers that want to fine-tune their writing and speaking skills with specialized and professional guidance. The goals of this course are to help you improve your listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. 

American English Pronunciation 
This is a class designed to improve your pronunciation and make you sound more American. In these classes, you will improve your telephone skills and your oral fluency through a series of activities and games specially designed by BCAE ESL instructors and ESL students.  You will also be introduced to a number of websites and drills that will help you to practice on your own.  Students will also have the option to record themselves in their first class and then again in future weeks to see their improvements.

Advanced English Conversation
This is an advanced conversation course for English language learners who want to achieve a higher level of fluency by learning about American idioms, expressions, and cultural themes that dictate discourse norms. Achieving communicative competency should be the goal of every language learner and the fundamental principle behind additional language instruction.

TOEFL Exam Preparation
This is an English as a Second Language (ESL) course for those preparing to take the TOEFL iBT. In this course, students will practice intergrated listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills as related to the types of questions asked on the TOEFL. Students will also learn effective note-taking and test taking strategies that will build confidence and allow students to work better with in strict time limitations.
