Many are involved in research projects, some of which are undertaken within NHS Trusts that provide the settings for practice placements.
Biosciences:
A review of teaching standards by the national Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) rated our courses in this subject area as excellent (22 out of 24). Many of our courses are accredited by the relevant professional body.
Many of our teaching staff work in our Biomedical Research Centre (BMRC) and feed scientific developments directly into our teaching programme. The BMRC was rated as very good (grade four) in the last national independent Research Assessment Exercise.
We offer a fully-supported, paid work placement in year three. We strongly recommend the placement as it allows you to develop your skills and makes you more attractive to potential employers. Our multinational placement partners include GlaxoSmithKline and AstraZeneca.
Right in the heart of Sheffield's busy city centre is the University's City Campus, a welcoming modern environment with some of the finest learning and teaching facilities in Europe.
Around this hub revolves a flourishing, diverse academic community. Our second campus, only a couple of miles away, is a complete contrast. The tranquil Collegiate Campus is set among lawns and trees in one of Sheffield's leafiest suburbs - just as typical of this city, England's greenest, as the bustling city centre.
In May 2005 we opened the impressive Robert Winston Building at Collegiate Crescent Campus. The £13 million " beacon for health and social care education" was officially opened by University Chancellor, Professor the Lord Winston and provides world-class facilities for our health and social care students.
It's not only the University environment that's popular with students - the city of Sheffield is a big attraction too.
Home to two universities with more than 50,000 students, plus Europe's largest further education college and the headquarters of Learning Direct (UfI), Sheffield is very much a learning city. It's one of the country's most in-demand student destinations, and once they arrive students enjoy the Sheffield experience so much that a higher proportion stay on to live and work here than in any other city outside London.
Sheffield is a bustling modern city, strikingly set over seven river valleys. It is Britain's fifth largest city - and also one of its greenest, with 150 woodlands and 50 public parks. With over 45,000 students at its two universities, Sheffield is one of the UK's major student cities. It was recently voted the country's top student destination by the Virgin Guide. Part of the city boundary falls within the Peak District National Park. Half the population live within 15 minutes of some of the UK's most beautiful open countryside.
Low cost, high quality living:
Student life here benefits from prices and rents well below the national average. A 2005 (Bank of Scotland) survey showed Sheffield has one England's lowest student cost of living. Sheffield is also one of the UK's safest cities, according to Home Office statistics. We also have large numbers of ex-students choosing to stay and make Sheffield their home, with a high graduate retention rate.
A city of sport:
Sport is very well catered for in Sheffield. With two league football clubs, world championship snooker, and regular basketball, rugby, ice hockey, and international athletics fixtures, there are plenty of opportunities to catch up with your favourite sport. If playing sport is your interest you'll find Sheffield has a wide choice of international standard sports facilities including an Olympic swimming pool, ice hockey rink, Don Valley athletics stadium and Europe's largest dry slope ski and snowboarding village. There is also fantastic walking and climbing close by in the Peak District.
Shopping - to suit all tastes
As you would expect, the city centre has a large range of shops from independent back street retailers & boutiques through to the chain mega-stores. Meadowhall is one of the largest indoor shopping complexes in Europe.
Getting to and around Sheffield:
Located in the centre of England, Sheffield is next to the M1 and has direct rail links to London, Leeds and Manchester. The railway station is right opposite the University's City Campus. Travelling within the city centre is also cheap, quick and easy, as Sheffield benefits from an excellent public transport system led by the Supertram.
