Discover English in Melbourne specializes in English language courses using the latest methods, materials and equipment. We are conveniently located on Bourke Street in Melbourne city centre. Students have access to modern and comfortable classrooms, a fully-resourced library in which to study and practice their language skills including audio visual language learning software. Discover English offers a range of English courses for both general and specialist purposes. We follow the Common European Framework of References for Languages (CEFR), the guidelines used for learner outcomes for learning, assessment and teaching.
English Language Courses:
We provide English language courses for both general and specialist purposes (Six levels from beginner, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate and advanced):
- General English Language Course:
The General English program develops students’ English language communication skills with a focus on building confidence and fluency. Through a communicative approach, students practice listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in a variety of ‘real life’ situations whilst integrating grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. The program has been designed around the New Cutting Edge Course Books with supplementary materials provided by the classroom teacher.
The General English program is available at six levels from Beginner to Advanced. Students undertake placement testing to determine their entry point and undertake weekly unit assessments based on the material covered. Based on assessment results and class performance, students may level up any week. There is no minimum entry level requirement. Part time General English courses are not available to students on student visas as their principal course of study.
Duration: 1 to 72 weeks
- English Language Course For Academic Purposes:
The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program familiarises students with English-medium academic conventions and develops skills specific to an academic environment. The EAP program prepares students for the transition from studying in their native language and home country to studying in English at an Australian University or College. The EAP program teaches students to consider texts, discourses and issues in a critical light and supports them in becoming independent learners.
The EAP program is offered at three levels: Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced. Students undertake weekly assessments in relation to the course material they have studied. Minimum entry requirement for EAP is IELTS Band 5.0 or PTE Academic Score 36.
Duration: 5 to 31 weeks
- IELTS English Language Exam Preparation Course:
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Preparation program focuses on developing exam techniques and preparing students for the listening, speaking, reading and writing tasks they will undertake in the IELTS exam. The program is intensive and is designed for students who wish to maximise their scoring potential on the IELTS exam within a short time frame.
The course provides practice and guidance in both general and academic test modes and aims to improve the student’s test taking techniques and their knowledge about the IELTS test format. Students undertake weekly tests based on IELTS past papers. Minimum entry level requirement for IELTS Preparation is IELTS Band 5.0 or PTE Academic Score 36. Part time IELTS courses are not available to students on student visas as their principal course of study.
Duration: 1 to 11 weeks
- Business English Language Course:
The Business English program equips students with English language skills specific to the corporate environment. English is an essential skill both for companies seeking to trade overseas and for employees wishing to develop careers in global industries. The Business English program develops students’ confidence and ability to communicate effectively in English in a business context by providing them with the necessary linguistic and cultural knowledge to do so. The program is designed around the Market Leader Course Books and covers a range of business related topics including retailing, marketing, careers, international trade and communications.
The Business English program is offered at two levels: Intermediate and Upper Intermediate. Students undertake pre-testing to determine their entry point and undertake weekly mini assessments in relation to the course material they have studied over the preceding weeks. Minimum entry level requirement for Business English is IELTS Band 5.0 or PTE Academic Score 36.
Duration: 1 to 27 weeks
- English Language Excel Course:
The English Excel program is an advanced level course designed to meet the needs of students who have a high level of English understanding but are looking for a challenging course to consolidate, refine and expand their command of the English language. The English Excel program develops students’ English language communication skills to enable confidence and fluency in a range of English language contexts at a near native level.
The program focuses on advanced level communication skills and grammar awareness delivered through the mediums of current affairs, world issues, Australian English and culture and English for the workplace. The course content is dynamic and varies in response to current trends and students’ interests. Students have weekly review tests in relation to the course material they have studied. Minimum entry level requirement for English Excel is IELTS Band 6.5 or PTE Academic Score 58.
Duration: 1 to 13 weeks.
- Custom Designed English Language Short Courses:
Courses are designed in consultation with clients for business executives and corporate groups providing a unique opportunity to provide one to one, small intensive programs or larger group programs including a combination of group activities and classes. The courses enable you to focus on your specific language needs, whether you need to prepare for a presentation, conference or meeting or learn English in the context of a specific industry, such as accounting, aviation, banking, engineering, finance, sales & marketing, human resources, law or medicine.
- English Language Course + Hospitality:
Discover English's "English + Hospitality" is a great new course for students on Tourist or Working Holiday visas. We offer 4 weeks of specialised English training for the hospitality industry and then you will join an integrated 2 week full-time bar & gaming course where you will include the following topics:
- Operating a bar
- Preparing & serving cocktails
- Responsible Service of Alchohol
- Barista & coffee art
- Table service
- Responsible Gambling Services and more...
After successful completion of the 6 week course, students can elect to take 10 hours of unpaid work experience in actual cafes and pubs around Melbourne. This work experience will give them real life exposure to the industry and provide them with a written letter of reference on completion.
