Staten Island Academy:
Staten Island Academy, located in Staten Island, New York City, is an accredited coeducational, college-preparatory day school offering Pre-K through Grade 12 programs. The Academy has been a part of the Staten Island community for more than 125 years, and today 100% of Academy graduates get into excellent colleges and universities here in New York City and throughout the country. We’re incredibly proud of them. The wonderful things that Academy students receive go far beyond academic learning, though: confidence, a love of exploration, leadership skills and much more, guaranteeing that all students can make the most of their potential during their years at the Academy and beyond.
Pre-K and Kindergarten ("Early Childhood"):
In Pre-K and Kindergarten, children learn to read, write, better understand one another, and develop the independence to accomplish tasks that would have been unheard of in any school five years ago.
Grades 1-4 Curriculum:
The Lower School curriculum is integrated with a belief that learning should be an inch wide and a mile deep. Through particular units of study, our curriculum looks long and completely at particular themes, rather than covering a large amount of disparate topics. Students explore these themes across all areas of study, including language arts, writing, math, science, art, music, dance, theatre, library, technology, and physical education (PE).
Grades 5-8 Curriculum:
The Middle School curriculum is designed to offer students a mix of challenge, exploration, and opportunity. Students study a wide variety of subjects, all of which are inter-connected by our teachers. A civilization they discover in History will be explored in Music. A book they read in English will be the inspiration for their work in Art class. Day by day and week by week, our teachers work together to make sure that students are understanding the material in as dynamic a way as possible.
Grades 9-12 Curriculum:
The Upper School curriculum is tough, and it pushes students to study harder, reach higher, and learn for the sake of truly understanding the world.
All Upper School students at the Academy are college-bound, and they and their families have high aspirations for the future. Consequently, college placement and counseling are high priorities and significant effort goes into ensuring that all students are fully prepared academically, socially and emotionally to meet the admissions standards of America’s most highly selective institutions of higher learning. The entire Upper School program is designed to accomplish this goal. Studies in English, History, Art, and Music are integrated into a "Humanities Curriculum" which shows students how all subjects live and breath from one discpline to the next.
Advanced Placement (AP) Curriculum:
There are 12 AP courses offered to students in Grades 11-12, including English, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Spanish Language, French Language, Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Computer Science, European History, US History, Studio Art, and others by independent study. In total, 11 faculty members teach AP courses.
Clubs and Activities and the School Trip Program:
Our extracurricular and school trip programs are the basis of our “Students at the Center” philosophy. We encourage active student participation in school trips and extra-curricular activities including community service, student government, academic competitions, student clubs, student exchange programs, JV and Varsity sports, numerous arts programs and productions, and other after-school offerings. Our school trips take students from Staten Island to the Brooklyn Bridge to Boston to London.
Summer Opportunities:
Upper School students are encouraged to take advantage of the summer opportunities presented to them. Starting with our Summer Experiences Panel in the fall, when students discuss their summer adventures in a school-wide assembly, Upper School students learn about summer opportunities all year long and start to plan for the summer. At the Summer Opportunities Fair, students can learn about local, national and international programs.
