Homestay Accommodation:

All immersion students live with local families in a homestay. The homestay is an important part of the immersion program and enables the student to live and practice English 24/7 during the 3-week session! Our homestay hosts are members of our community. Like you, they are young, old, married couples with children, single people living alone, groups of people sharing housing, working people, retirees, professionals, shop owners, scientists, schoolteachers, artists and artisans. We try to match students and hosts with similar interests. Every summer, hosts generously open their homes to English immersion students because they want to meet you and because they want to support Penobscot School.

Engage with speakers that address a variety of issues such as land conservation, local government, and more.

Participate in weekly individual tutorials intended to enhance your understanding of the English language and prepare you for a brief presentation at the end of the course.

Meals and Meal Teams:

Meals are always a time for conversation and are an important part of the immersion experience. Usually, students have breakfast with their hosts before coming to school each morning. Lunch is taken at the school and is often provided by community members who enjoy meeting the students.  Dinner is also taken at the school and includes meals provided by community members as well as meals shopped for - and prepared by - English Immersion students in our state-of-the-art kitchen.  Morning snack is also provided during a half hour break taken mid-morning.

Tutorial and Student Presentations:

An essential part of our English immersion program, students prepare a brief presentation on a topic of interest to be presented during the last week of their stay.  Individual tutors work with students to prepare presentations and assist them throughout their stay.  The final presentation, done in a warm and relaxed atmosphere, is a time for practicing English speaking skills. Presentations are often given just before the graduation ceremony and provide for wonderful conversation.  This is a great opportunity for students to see just how much progress they have made!  For many students, this is the highlight of their English immersion experience!

The Creativity Workshop
Courses / Programs
Using the Tools of Creative Writing, Memoir, Art, Photography, Storytelling and Mindfulness.

We teach from the point of view that people are by nature creative and that creativity, like DNA, is unique to each individual. We believe that in the right atmosphere and with the right tools anyone can tap into the creative stream that runs through us all.

To help you access and develop your creativity, we have developed a progression of exercises and techniques that explore sense perceptions, free-form writing and drawing, associative thinking, mapmaking, constructive daydreaming, memory, collage, and photography.

The only requirements for attending our workshops are curiosity and a desire to explore the creative spirit inherent to us all.
