Certificate Course in the Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
Teaching English To Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is a rapidly expanding profession. Demand for professionally trained TESOL teachers is strong in Australia and abroad. TESOL students from the UNSW Institute of Languages have been successful in gaining teaching positions in public and private sector educational institutions in Australia and overseas. The TESOL courses at the UNSW Institute of Languages are internationally respected and your certificate qualification will be your key to personal and professional advancement. Courses are offered throughout the year.
Study Options:
- Part-time Course: 12 weeks (3 hours, 2 evenings per week plus 6 hours on alternate Saturdays)
- Full-time Course: 4 weeks (6 hours per day, Monday – Friday)
Course Content
- Theoretical component Our lecture/workshops provide a solid theoretical background including language analysis, teacher strategies, phonology and current teaching methodologies. These take place on two evenings from 6.00pm to 9.00pm.
- Practical component This consists of classroom observations, microteaching (peer teaching) and a teaching practicum. The observations and the practicum take place on weekdays between 9.00am and 6.30pm. Microteaching sessions are usually offered during the day and in the evening.
- Full Time course includes a distance component prior to course commencement.
- The University of New South Wales gives advanced standing of 12 Units Of Credit (two courses) in the following post graduate programs to those who have an undergraduate degree and who have completed their Certificate in TESOL with us in the last 5 years:

- MA program in Applied Linguistics
Teaching Centres
The National ELT Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) recognises the Certificate in TESOL, in combination with a 3-year degree, as an appropriate TESOL qualification for teaching overseas students in Australia.
