Undergraduate & Postgraduate Degree Courses:

Geology Courses:

- BSc Geology
This geology degree programme has been specifically designed to give you a comprehensive training in all aspects of geology, providing an understanding of the nature, dynamics and evolution of the physical, chemical and biological processes operating on the Earth over the past four billion years. The flexible modular system provides you with extensive coverage of all of the fundamental aspects of cutting edge geology. In the later stages, you can tailor your geology degree to your own requirements, by choosing specialist modules in particular areas. These can range from the applied aspects of mineral, petroleum and environmental geology to the frontier areas of marine geophysics, sediment dynamics, micropalaeontology, active tectonics and its associated natural hazards, seafloor exploration and palaeoclimate change.

- MSci Geology
If you are looking for a professional career in the Earth sciences, this geology degree programme will provide you with a great breadth and depth of geological knowledge and a complete understanding of current research areas in the geological sciences. Particular emphasis is placed on research skills developed through extensive group and independent project work. Interaction with scientists from the NOCS research community is embedded in the programme, ensuring a research-led experience. Within the flexible modular system, the MSci Geology degree programme allows you to develop an extensive and in-depth coverage of all of the fundamental aspects of cutting-edge geology. You will examine such subjects as the evolution of the Earth as a complex land-ocean-atmosphere system, study the development, the tectonic development of the Earth’s continental margins and their impact on Earth’s resources, and the complex processes resulting in the Earth’s climate, past and present.

- BSc Geology with foundation year
The University of Southampton Science Foundation Year is designed to provide a route to a science degree if you do not have the traditional entry qualifications. This programme may suit you if you are studying for A levels in subjects different from those normally required for these degrees. It may also interest you if you are a mature applicant, with skills and experience from employment, or if you come from a part of the world where the education system is different from the British A level system. By applying for this course you are expressing a general interest in moving on to the BSc (Hons) Geology (UCAS code 602).  Providing you achieve at least 60 percent in biology, chemistry and maths, you will have a guaranteed place this course for the following year.

With successful completion, you could also switch to other BSc degrees in Marine Biology, Oceanography or Geology. The Science Foundation Year also qualifies you for entry to degrees in the fields of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, and Environmental Science at the University. Students registered on the programme are full-time members of the University of Southampton student community with access to accommodation within halls of residence and full use of recreational, sports, library and IT facilities.

- BSc Geology with Marine Biology
This geology degree combination is unique to Southampton and will equip you for a scientific career in Earth system history, palaeoceanography or palaeoclimatology. The programme has been designed to help you develop a thorough background in geology together with an understanding of the biology, evolution and ecology of the organisms most commonly found in the fossil record. Within the degree there are two pathways:

* Whole organism: This pathway covers whole organism biology, namely the marine vertebrates, marine invertebrates and their ecology. This is the choice for those interested in palaeobiology.

* Palaeoceanographic: This pathway investigates the biology of the micro-organisms that regulate the Earth system and in the past have been so abundant as to have formed huge thicknesses of sediments, such as chalk deposits. Microfossils are a critical proxy in palaeoceanography and palaeoclimatology, and this pathway offers both taught modules and research project options in these fields, areas in which Southampton is a world leader.

BSc Geology with Physical Geography
The modules available will not only provide extensive coverage of all of the fundamental aspects of cutting edge geology but also the ability to tailor your geology degree to your own requirements, by choosing to specialise in particular areas. Geology modules will comprise 75 per cent of your degree and Physical geography, 25 per cent. The flexible modular system provides you with extensive coverage of all of the fundamental aspects of cutting edge geology. In the later stages, you can tailor your geology degree to your own requirements, by choosing specialist modules in particular areas.

Geological specialisations range from the applied aspects of resource and environmental geology to the frontier areas of sediment dynamics, seafloor exploration and the history of the oceans. An equally-wide choice is available to you in physical geography, with most students choosing to specialise in surface physical processes such as rivers, glaciers, coastal erosion and in such areas as Quaternary climatic change.

MSci Geology with study abroad
This geology degree is a variation of our highly successful MSci Geology programme with the opportunity to spend time during your third year at a top overseas University. Current destinations include Pennsylvania State University in the US, which has a powerhouse American Earth Science department, and at University of Bergen, in Norway, with exceedingly strong links to and teaching strengths in petroleum geoscience. You will follow Southampton’s MSci Geology programme in years one and two, then, following your five-week independent mapping project during the summer vacation, you will enrol at the overseas university to study an exciting variety of advanced modules during year three. A bespoke programme of modules will be created through discussion between the Geology Programme Leader, their equivalent at the overseas university and yourself. Your final year, back in Southampton, will again follow the innovative, research-led MSci Geology programme, but you may also carry out a summer research collaboration with new colleagues from your overseas university.

MSci Ocean, Earth and Climate Science
Our planet is a complex and dynamic system. Gaining an appreciation of how it works is critical to our understanding of the environment and climate. We are ideally positioned to capitalise on the research expertise of internationally-renowned scientific staff, to deliver the most up-to-date and topical degree of this type in the country. This programme has been designed to provide a broad and complete education in Earth and marine system science, examining the way in which the Earth functions as a system, to determine our environment and climate.

You will gain a thorough understanding of the nature and dynamics of the interacting physical, chemical, geological and biological processes operating on the Earth over its whole lifetime of more than four billion years - but with special emphasis on the processes which are operating right now. The programme is highly multidisciplinary, and deals with all aspects of the Earth system including the oceans, atmosphere, ice, solid Earth, and the biosphere.

Geophysics Courses:

BSc Geophysical Sciences
Geophysics degrees explores how physical principles can be applied to study processes operating in, on and around our planet, such as motion within its core tectonic movements, dynamics of the oceans and atmosphere, and the interactions in space between the solar wind and the Earth’s magnetic field. At a practical level, engineers employ geophysical methods to explore below the Earth’s surface in the search for oil, gas and other natural resources as well as for scientific investigation. Increasingly, geophysicists are involved in monitoring the environment and assessing natural hazards, whether global or connected with specific engineering projects.

This geophysics degree programme has been designed to provide comprehensive training in geophysics. The modular system will provide you with extensive knowledge of all of the fundamental aspects. You will have the opportunity to tailor your degree to your own requirements by choosing options in particular areas of the subject, ranging from seafloor exploration to tides and waves within the oceans, or studying the Earth from satellites, with further options available in maths, physics and archaeology.

With London and Europe only a train ride away, our students really can stay connected and enjoy all that the South East and the continent have to offer.

Over 80% of our students told the 2011 National Student Survey (NSS) that they were ‘overall satisfied’ with their experience. 84% of our students tell us our excellent teaching is just one of the reasons students choose us.
We have thousands of courses on offer in the arts and humanities, applied and social sciences, (including business) and health, and we are among the best in the country for teacher training, which was rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted in 2010.
