Wairarapa College:
Wairarapa College is a state, co-educational school with boarding facilities, located in Masterton which blends tradition with innovation as it seeks to develop the full potential of each student. Set in spacious and beautiful grounds, the College contains a mixture of old and new buildings. It presents an attractive learning environment for students. Special features of the College include the college boarding hostel, College House, purpose built information computer suite, specialist arts centre, technology centre, a school farm and agriculture laboratory which foster a strong emphasis on the teaching of Agriculture and Horticulture.
Core Subjects: English, Mathematics, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, Geography, History. A wide range of additional optional subjects are available.
All students are strongly encouraged to participate in sport and the school provides opportunities for involvement over a wide range of activities.
The School Swimming and Athletics Sports held early in term one provide an opportunity for students to be involved at a championship, graded or interhouse level. The cross-country event held later in term two is also an event for whole school participation.
Summer sports teams for both boys and girls operate in cricket and tennis at both senior and junior levels. School teams also play in local and regional competitions in indoor hockey, indoor soccer, canoe polo, kayaking, dragon boating, equestrian events and golf.
A high percentage (80%) of students are actively involved in winter sport codes. These include rugby, netball, hockey, badminton, soccer, basketball, orienteering and table tennis.
All students have the opportunity of playing in a winter sport of their choice at an appropriate level.
There is a strong staff input into coaching both summer and winter sports codes.
Wairarapa College sport is managed by the Code Heads with assistance from the Sports Co-Ordinator and the School's Sports Council.
The Sports Council assists with some funding for sports within the College and is responsible for the schools sporting policy in conjunction with the Senior Management of the school and the schools B.O.T.
Wairarapa College is a school that places a good deal of importance on pupils taking an active part in sporting pursuits.
