English:

With the aim of developing strong competencies in analytical, argumentative, creative and personal writing, all English courses are writing-intensive and deeply supportive of independent thinking and original expression.

Each course includes instruction in vocabulary acquisition, grammar, usage, mechanics and style; additionally, each year’s curriculum includes a substantial research assignment. The overarching goal of the department is to give our students every opportunity to become effective readers, thinkers and writers.

Math:
The mathematics department prepares each student for further study by providing a solid foundation in mathematical skills while encouraging organized critical thinking. By providing a caring learning environment, the department helps students become independent problem solvers.

The department integrates technology in all of its courses helping students to focus on reasoning skills and visualize mathematical concepts. The department uses many different teaching strategies in its pursuit of providing students with the best possible mathematics education.

Science:
The science department believes that science is fundamental and essential for the total development of all of our students. The diverse areas of study within the sciences work together to develop a practical knowledge of the universe and also to introduce students to methods of critical analysis.

These skills are invaluable as the students face the process of informed and mature decision-making in today’s technological society.

Social Studies:
The social studies department offers all students a progression of courses designed to develop knowledge and skills in the areas of geography, history, economics, politics, psychology and historiography.

The courses progress along several axes: from national histories (USA) to regional (Latin America) histories to world history, from simple facts and narratives to more complex theories and analyses, and lastly from the use of direct primary sources to more complicated statistical and secondary sources.

Foreign Languages:
The foreign languages we offer include Spanish, French and Latin Proficiency in communication in all of its forms – speaking, writing, reading, and listening – is the major objective of the modern foreign language program. In each class, the instructors seek an appropriate balance among these skills.

Computer Studies:
We are currentlx offering courses in graphic design where we introduces graphic art as a visual communicator. Students also learn the basics of digital photography and are introduced to Adobe Photoshop for photo editing.

The goals of the fine arts classes include providing a positive working environment for all students to express themselves freely and creatively while training all students to become well-rounded, thoughtful, and thinking artists in all fields.

Physical Education:

Our P.E. courses include activities such as cardio kickboxing, pilates, weight training, badminton, ultimate frisbee, golf, ballroom dancing, hiking, swimming and lacrosse.

Advanced Placement Courses:

We offer many advanced placement courses, which comprise Advanced English 1, Honors English 2, AP English 3 (Language and Composition), and AP English 4 (Literature and Composition) as well as Calculus-AB, Biology, French, Latin and Spanish.

College Preparation Courses:
At Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy students sit for SAT I and the ACT examinations.

Turning Winds Academic Institute (TWAI)

Located in northwestern Montana, Turning Winds Academic Institute (TWAI) is an accredited, family-run, therapeutic boarding school for troubled teens (boys and girls) ages 13-18.

We welcome students from California, across the United States, & students from around the world (TWAI is authorized to issue 1-20's for international students).

In our beautiful, peaceful, and safe location, we combine the benefits of a therapeutic boarding school, a wilderness program, and a residential treatment center (RTC).

TWAI has been serving struggling teens and their families since 2002, with an exceptional degree of success.

We provide an extremely high standard of therapeutic treatment to our students, and offer help for the following presenting issues: poor academic performance, behavioral problems, addictions, low self-worth, spectrum disorders, ADD/ADHD, and attachment disorders among others.

We are a small program (40 students) which means that we are able to provide a truly unique and customized approach for every student.
