BIR provides a variety of resources that support student learning. Structured study halls and easy access to computer labs give students opportunities to explore English in ways that interest them. A collection of electronic and online resources are available for interactive practice. BIR also has a lending library where students can choose from a collection of materials that are accessible to students at all levels of English language proficiency.
The Homestay Program is a great way to learn English and American culture outside of the classroom. The Homestay Program matches students with a family in Chicago and the family provides the student with two meals per day and a warm, comfortable place to stay. But the experience goes far beyond that. Living with an American family provides the student with opportunities to explore Chicago, learn aspects of American life that are not covered in the classroom, and friendships that last a lifetime.
One-on-one, small group and peer tutoring are available to students in BIR English Language Programs. Tutoring adds value to the education at BIR by offering personal attention, individual feedback and choices about what a student needs to learn. Flexible schedules with qualified, friendly tutors are available through BIR’s Learning Center. The Learning Center also offers students a comfortable place to study and get homework help.
Chicago is one of the world’s most exciting cities, with a rich heritage and vibrant cultural life. Our students enjoy all the excitement and conveniences the city has to offer: bustling nightlife, fascinating cultural activities, an excellent public transportation system, and of course, beautiful Lake Michigan.
As a BIR student you will have the opportunity to explore the many cultural attractions of Chicago. Take a boat tour down the Chicago River and view world renowned architecture. Check out the latest exhibit at the Field Museum, and visit the Shedd Aquarium right next door while you’re there. At night there are plenty of theaters, bars, and comedy clubs to keep you going into the early hours of the morning!
