Our Mission:

Photo of Boarding High School in ColoradoSteamboat pioneer Lowell Whiteman dreamed of a school which would offer young people a rigorous college preparatory education coupled with "so much adventure for so long that they would have sufficient opportunity to grow and mature."

Today the Lowell Whiteman School is no different; our traditional academic curriculum continues to act as the foundation of the education we offer, while the foreign travel program, the fall camping program, and competitive winter sports training complement our classroom approach.

At Lowell Whiteman, students have the opportunity to live in a unique setting, develop a passion for life-long learning, and challenge themselves to act as leaders, both indoors and out, and at home and abroad.

Experiential Education:
Our founder, Lowell Whiteman was one of the first to pioneer Experiential education. He combined Experiential education with academic education in the 1950’s. Today, a lot of schools have added Experiential, but LWS programs have been integral to the lives of its students and faculty since 1957.

Few schools provide the college preparatory education along with the outdoor adventure. Our long history of expertise with Experiential education has changed lives for over fifty years.

According to our alums, the Lowell Whiteman Experience is:
- An innovative way to enrich education.
- Epic adventure - learning to excel in the out-of-doors.
- Exposure to the world, creating community, and world-minded citizens.
- A way to build character, agility, strength and self confidence - allowing students to stretch themselves.
- Life-long relationship building at school and abroad; Experiential education teaches communication and emotional skills one does not get in a traditional school environment.

Our History:

Steamboat Mountain School was founded in 1957 by traveler, outdoorsman, adventurer, horseman, cowboy, and entrepreneur Lowell Whiteman, and it bears his Renaissance-man imprint today. The School’s origins date back to the 1930s, when Lowell sought to open a summer camp for boys as a complement to the famous Perry-Mansfield performing arts camp for girls a few miles down the road. World War II delayed his plans. When the war ended he started the Lowell Whiteman Ranch for Boys.
