Philosophy:

Photo of International school in Yokohama, JapanSaint Maur International School bases its education on the belief that each student was created with unique abilities, strengths, and talents. Therefore, Saint Maur administration and staff are committed to the development of each student's individual talents to the furthest degree possible. The cultural diversity inherent in the international educational experience offered at Saint Maur International School encourages students to seek their unique identity in the school and in the world.

Recognition of the rights and needs of other human beings is a fundamental pre-requisite in such a community-building process. The skills needed to recognize the rights of others must first be modeled and taught inside the learning community, then applied outside of the school in order to cultivate a sense of global responsibility and awareness. Fostering such a global perspective is an important aspect of the international education process.

Goals and Objectives:

The basic objective of Saint Maur International School is to provide a Pre-school, Elementary and Secondary education for international students residing in Japan, by using the English language as the primary medium of instruction. An international student is defined as a student whose life experiences span more than one cultural dimension.

Starting with a Montessori program in the Pre-school and continuing to the option for an International Baccalaureate diploma in the Secondary School, the academic objectives of the school are to develop each student's intellectual potential to the fullest, and to teach the intellectual skills the students will need to function as contributing members of society. At Saint Maur we recognize that students learn effectively when they enjoy themselves. Therefore, the learning atmosphere balances work and enjoyment. Although a Saint Maur International School education seeks primarily to prepare students for entrance into colleges and universities throughout the world, the administration and faculty recognize that some students have personal abilities and aspirations which lead them in directions other than higher education.

Programs:

Pre-school Program; Elementary School Program; Secondary School Program; International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE); The International Baccalaureate Program (IB).

A Short School History:

Saint Maur International School was established in 1872 by Mother Mathilde Raclot, a French nun, and four French and Irish nuns from the congregation of the Sisters of the Infant Jesus. The school was founded to provide children from the international community, of all nationalities and religious denominations, with a quality education based upon respect and a deep understanding and appreciation of people's differences. It remains the oldest international school in Asia and third oldest in the world.

In 2007, to cater mainly to short-term French nationals residing in the Yokohama/Tokyo area, the school established a French Section enabling French-speaking students in the elementary school to pursue the French National Curriculum. To cater to future development, a small property adjacent to the main campus was purchased in 2007.

Thanks to the support of the community, individuals and companies, the school continues to develop to address the needs of the students, whose ages range from 2 1/2 to 18+, by offering a relevant quality education within a modern facility set in an environment conducive to developing the mental, physical, spiritual, social and creative being within each student entrusted to its care.

Saint Maur was the first international school in Japan to introduce, among other recognized programs:
* International Montessori
* IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary School Education)
* IPC (International Primary Curriculum)
* Lions-Quest - values program
* International Trinity College of Music Program
